In this special episode of The Anfield Talk , I sit down with Sky Sports legend Geoff Shreeves to discuss the club's transfer business. He gives his views on Jurgen Klopp's plan to develop homegrown talent, the club's transfer business in general, and the future of Takumi Minamino and Naby Keita. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy the show! Hopefully, you'll find it entertaining as much as I did!
Jurgen Klopp's plan to bring in homegrown talent
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has a reputation for nurturing young players. In his 14 years as a manager, the German has developed a whole host of talent, from the likes of Serbian centre-back Neven Subotic to the future Chelsea and Wolfsburg star Andre Schurrle. Bringing in homegrown talent is a long-term vision, but Klopp is determined to create a strong team that can compete with the big boys.
Liverpool's transfer business under a cloud
It has been well documented for a while that Liverpool's target players are Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Mohamed Salah. Both have been mentioned in various media reports on a daily or weekly basis since the end of last season. However, only overnight on Tuesday was it confirmed that Liverpool had made multiple bids for the player. While this may have been an uncharacteristic move for Liverpool, it is perhaps a case of selling club's best deal.
Takumi Minamino's future at Anfield
After signing a contract with Liverpool until 2021, Takumi Minamino made a strong start to the season, helping the Reds to win the Premier League for the first time in 30 years. He also scored in a 7-0 thrashing of Crystal Palace in the Community Shield. However, despite his impressive form, Minamino failed to get regular starts for the Reds and was loaned out to Southampton. In a move to Southampton, Minamino struggled to find consistency but Jurgen Klopp is clearly confident in his ability to continue to impress at Anfield.
Naby Keita's future at Anfield
A recent report suggests that the Reds are in talks with Naby Keita's current club to sign him. However, Keita has not been fully fit and has missed a large number of games in the Premier League. However, his future at Anfield could be bright. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has reportedly told the club to sign the striker. The 24-year-old played a crucial role for RB Leipzig last season, ensuring they finished second in the Bundesliga.
Fabio Carvalho
Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Italian midfielder Fabio Carvalho from Fulham, and Klopp has expressed his excitement over the move. The former Fulham midfielder will wear the No. 28 shirt, and played a pivotal role in Fulham's promotion to the Premier League in 2021-22. He will join the Reds on Monday for pre-season training, and is expected to feature against Crystal Palace in the Premier League opener.
Serge Gnabry
Rumours are circulating that Liverpool are in talks with Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry. The winger, who is currently valued at EUR80 million by Bayern Munich, is available on loan to the Reds. While primarily a right winger, he is versatile and can play anywhere along the front line. Last season, he was one of the best performers for the German side, scoring 63 goals in 171 appearances.
Takumi Minamino
Japan international Takumi Minamino, aka "Takumi" has recently signed for Liverpool FC. Minamino spent two years in the youth system at Cerezo Osaka. He joined the first team in August 2012 and made his debut in November 2012. He played the entire game against Kawasaki Frontale and scored his first goal in December 2012.
Diogo Jota
It's a new era at Anfield as Liverpool have signed Diogo Jota and Rob Gutmann as strikers. Diogo has already made a name for himself, netting twice in the League Cup final and uniting Liverpool fans at Wembley. The new signing was brought in to replace the retiring David Coleman who had commented on the player's exploits. The show also features John Gibbons, Rob Gutmann and Mike Kearney.
Diogo Jota's performance against Nottingham Forest
Liverpool are now through to the FA Cup semi-finals with a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest. Despite not being at their mercurial best, Liverpool were still able to earn three points against a Championship side thanks to Diogo Jota's late goal. Earlier in the game, Roberto Firmino had a good chance to score against Ethan Horvath, but his tame shot was easily gathered by the Forest keeper. Towards the end, Philip Zinckernagel missed a golden opportunity and the resulting penalty was the outcome of an injury.
Liverpool's FA Cup quarter final win against Nottingham Forest
Liverpool's late winner over Nottingham Forest has secured the club a place in the FA Cup semi-finals. The win over Forest sees them face Manchester City. Forest, who finished ninth in the Championship, had already knocked out Premier League sides Arsenal and Leicester City. However, they looked like being set up to cause an upset when Diogo Jota poked in a late winner from close range.
