As the Plane is Pitched Up

One of the difficulties with flying in Minecraft is the inability to see the ground due shorter render distances. MFS provides a wide range of flight instruments to help solve this issue. You can add instruments to the plane GUI. They will appear on the HUD and on your plane depending on where they are placed in the GUI. You can change the four modes of the HUD by pressing the mod key in conjunction with the cam lock key.

1. Normal: Shows the top row of gauges, the throttle, parking brake and flaps. 2. Full: Displays the normal HUD as well as lower gauge rows.

3. Light Three gauges are displayed. No background. Also displays in third-person.

4. None: There is no HUD displayed.

There are a myriad of gauges and instruments available for planes. Each has its own use.

Attitude Indicator

Perhaps one of the most versatile instruments, the attitude indicator displays the current position of the aircraft in relation to the ground. The indicator rotates to show the current position, while its inner circle moves up or down to indicate the pitch. The direction that the plane is pointed in is not necessarily the same as its direction. A plane that points up could be in a stall or can be thrown down like rocks.

Altimeter

This gauge simply shows how high the plane is. The long pointer counts 10 blocks while the short pointer counts 100. The default behavior of the altimeter is to read 0 at the Y=0 level, however you can alter this behavior to read 0 at sea level (Y=64).

Heading Indicator

A simple gauge that tells you where you're headed. While it is similar to the real world counterpart the gauge is modified to accommodate Minecraft's peculiar south-is-positive coordinate system. You can certainly use the debug screen, but what's the fun in doing that?

Airspeed Indicator

This gauge shows how the plane is moving in blocks per second. In general the plane should flyable in the green zone, however, this is dependent on the flap settings and weight. The yellow zone is safe but sudden movements and deployment of flaps isn't recommended. The red zone must be avoided, as exceeding this speed can result in the things breaking. Minecraft will stop processing the plane's forces correctly after it has passed 50 blocks per second. This can lead to undefined behavior. Note that the speed at which you can fly changes if the speed factor is altered in the config.

Turn Coordinator

This gauge shows the rate at which the plane is turning as well as the speed at which the turn is increasing. This means that it will move when the plane starts rolling, but will even out when the aileron is no longer applied. This allows the pilot to alter the plane's speed to make an even turn. The gauge's bottom indicates the glide of the turn, or how straight the plane is in relation to its direction. A well-coordinated turn will result in the maximum lift potential and the best control.

Turn and Slip Indicator

This indicator is the precursor to the turn coordinator. The difference is that this indicator does not consider the roll of the aircraft. It is favored by older and more experienced pilots and pilots, it is able to perform the Stark 1-2-3 maneuver in the event that the artificial horizon is lost because of clouds or failure of the attitude indicator.

Vertical Speed Indicator

This indicator indicates how many blocks per second the plane is moving in the Y-direction. The gradual climb is about 0.75 However, with flaps or a lighter payload this could be higher than 1.

Lift Reserve Indicator

A relative newcomer in the world of aeronautics the indicator of lift reserve indicates how much of the aircraft's potential for lift is being used. The yellow-green border indicates that the plane is currently operating at an angle of attack of 0, i.e. there is no lift. As the plane is tilted up the needle is moving towards the red zone. In the yellow-red region, the plane is at the critical angle of attack, and is generating the maximum lift. The plane could slow down if it crosses the red zone. This could lead to a rapid loss in lift potential. It is useful when runways with short lengths require rapid ascent.

Tachometer

This gauge displays the current RPM of all engines. This gauge also displays the safest speed as indicated by the redline marker. Use this to ensure you aren't over-revving your engines.

Fuel Gauge

Shows fuel level. 'Nuff said.

Fuel Flow Gauge

This gauge displays the fuel consumption rate of the aircraft. This gauge is more than an essential part. Fuel consumption is expressed in buckets per minute, with a bucket representing the default value of lava fuel of 1000.

Engine Temperature Gauge

This gauge shows the temperature of each engine. To ensure that the engine is running at its maximum the needle should be in the green. An engine that has a low temperature in the yellow area needs to be warmed up prior to taking off to prevent engine damage, in contrast, an engine that has temperatures that are above the red mark will be damaged due to overheating.
