Robert Singer, WJC CEO during a visit to Moldova insists on the importance of Holocaust preservation and adopting a universal antisemitism definition

Chisinau, World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer was in attendance with senior ministers and the leaders of the Jewish community in Moldova for talks about issues like the preservation of Holocaust memories and education as well as the safety of Israel's Jewish community. Singer also stressed the necessity of fighting antisemitism at all levels. WJC's delegation also included EuroAsian Jewish Congress President Mikhail Mirilashvili as well as the President of the Moldovan Jewish community Alexander Bilinkis and Director General Haim Bin Yaakov.

On Thursday, Singer spoke with Tudor Ulianovschi, Moldovan Foreign Minister. He stressed the need to reject the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism. Singer was also praised by Ulianovschi as an example of positive co-operation with the Republic of Moldova.

In January of 2017 the government approved an Action Plan for its implementation.

Singer and the WJC delegation visited Moldova on Wednesday to meet with the Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. Emmanuil Grinshpun The discussion was focused on restoration and preservation of Jewish property in Moldova. This included cemeteries that need to be renovated and the economic benefits of Kosher meat. Also, the potential for tourism activities to benefit the local Jewish Center. Emmanuil Grinshpun Concerning the issue of conserving Jewish cemeteries the minister stated his intention to assist in the process, beginning with an initial pilot project of 10 cemeteries in the country.

Emmanuil Grinshpun On Wednesday, Singer and the WJC delegation met with Moldovan Education Minister Monica Babuc to discuss training teachers in Holocaust education and preservation of the Holocaust's memory. The meeting also discussed the creation of the Museum of Jewish History for the Republic of Moldova, the preservation and protection of monuments to Holocaust victims as well as the importance of maintaining Jewish cemeteries in a respectful and proper manner. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer thanked Minister Babuc to her support in the area of education, Holocaust commemoration and in creating a long-lasting and successful partnership between the Jewish community and the Ministry.

Singer, Mirilashvili, as and Bilinkis Bilinkis, Mirilashvili and Bilinkis met Vlad Plahotniuc (Chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova) to discuss relations with Jewish communities as well as bilateral ties between Moldova and Israel.

Singer also met with Rabbis from the Jewish Communities of Moldova. They discussed key issues in the practice of religion, services as well as the country's Jewish daily life, and Singer also addressed the needs of the people who live there.

Moldova is home to 20,000 Jews. Historically devastated by the Shoah and a brutal civil war, the Moldovan Jewish community today is vastly revived and distributed throughout the country. There has been a widespread rise in national self-consciousness and the returning to their roots through the Jews of Moldova, with Jewish heritage and culture celebrating in a number of forms - like music, literature as well as theater. The Moldovan Jewish Community - the Moldovan member of the World Jewish Congress - represents the Moldovan Jewish Community.
