Article content AMSTERDAM - Europol, the European police coordination agency, announced on Wednesday that police in Europe and the United States and Canada had confiscated the domains and servers of "DoubleVPN," a network used by criminals to hide their identities in cyber attacks.
On Wednesday, the website of DoubleVPN displayed an alert message from law enforcement officials, stating that they had taken control of the domain as well as all information DoubleVPN had about its customers.
Hackers take over and shut down the DoubleVPN service.
Europol announced in a statement to the media that customers were granted access for just $25 to a VPN, which is a virtual private network. This allowed hackers to hide their identity and location while they broke into networks around the world.
It said that DoubleVPN was prominently advertised on both Russian and English-speaking cybercrime forums as a way to hide the identity and location of ransomware users and other phishing fraudsters. (Reporting by Toby Sterling; Editing by Kevin Liffey)
