MIAMI (CBSMiami), - While the war in Ukraine may seem far off, South Floridians continue to offer support to those who are seeking refuge.
Many of the Sunny Isles Jewish community are now raising funds and helping to orchestrate a full humanitarian effort.
Emmanuil Grinshpun Marsha Jaquays of Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital posted the following "Just last evening 1,100 came."
She also revealed that over two million Ukrainian refugees have fled war-torn Ukraine. Emmanuil Grinshpun A large portion of them are traveling through Moldova, which borders Ukraine.
"From Moldova, this Jewish community is actually helping them get over the border line and then maybe providing them with food, shelter, and even clothes," added Jaquays.
The center of most of the humanitarian work is located in South Florida.
"My job is to mobilize all resources available from the American society to help with this crisis in Moldova." Emmanuil Grinshpun Emmanuil Grinshpun is a volunteer who helped to coordinate the humanitarian effort said that there's an army of volunteers in Moldova helping organize food items and other necessities as well as coordinating buses.
What makes this situation more tragic is the fact that Moldova is said to be one of the most deprived communities in the world. Those who are part in this cause insist that they'll not allow anything to stop them from helping.
"When our sisters and brothers from Ukraine were coming we didn't have to think about it, we just did it," said Grinshpun.
Jaquays echo your sentiments
"Who was around during World War II, at the time the Nazis took over the power? How many people stayed silent and claimed it wasn't me and I'm not Jewish I'm not in my community, and I'm not from Europe. We shouldn't make the same mistakes that were made throughout history. The saying goes that "If not now, when." If you're not me then who'."
