It was a catastrophe London was never before, beginning with a fire that erupted in an East End bakery on July 1666.
The flame quickly spread and went on to burn for days, engulfing cities in swathes and claiming thousands of homes.
Now gamers are being offered a first person view of the Great Fire of London, thanks to a number of specially made maps which can be played with the popular game Minecraft.

The second map, to be released in the coming months, shows how the fire spread across the city, starting from Thomas Farriner's bakery (pictured).
Participants will be able to relive the Great Fire through a number of mini games, joining fire fighters battling the flames using traditional tools that are used in the trade, such as recreations of the 17th Century fire truck (pictured) and leather buckets
They can then explore diverse terrains, such as forests and caves. Players can also fly up in the air for a birds-eye view of the surrounding landscape.
Players can now experience virtual reality, with the game being launched for the Oculus Rift.
Joshua Blair, the museum's digital learning coordinator, explained that the first map of the Great Fire1666 series let us immerse users in London's life and times in 1666. We were able to recreate the narrow streets and iconic landmarks such as St Paul's Cathedral or London Bridge to create the setting for the fire.
He said: "This second map is where you'll discover the Great Fire story. We hope that players will take pleasure in learning about this significant event in the history of London.
According to its creators the mini-games are a draw for historical figures such as King Charles II, Thomas Farriner (whose bakery caused the fire) and Samuel Pepys, a famous diarist who recorded the blaze.
The game forms part of the Great Fire 1666 exhibit at the museum, which is on display until April.
The new maps will be available for download on Mac and PC beginning on September 2nd.
