What's the Flavor?

Alex: You've also been working on an unpaid Marketplace map of Summer's base.



Max Brooks: Yeah! The mountain is visible on the map after Guy and Summer have left. Actually, that was a big issue. I was two-thirds way through the writing of The Mountain and I sat down to play the game, and the whole Nether was transformed from top to bottom! Instead of getting mad I realized that this was the most important lesson I have learned in my life. You must adapt to the world when it changes.



Alex Alex: Much like The Island, the book is extremely precise.



Max Brooks: Research is a key component of everything I do. adda bank Because I spend a lot of time doing research I don't have enough time to write as many books. When it comes to something like Minecraft I live with the fear that someone will say, "That would never happen!" So I played thousands of hours playing Minecraft to make sure the game's mechanics work in the book. There are also certain things that just happen in Minecraft that you can't think of on your own. In The Island, my character shoots his last arrow at a creeper and hits a bat that is able to fly by. It happened to me when I was playing Minecraft!



Alex: A lot of the fun of these novels comes from the way they feel real.



Max Brooks: Yeah, and in everything I write, I want to establish trust with the reader. I want them to know that when they read one of my books they can trust me to lead them on a journey through a land that I know - that I'm their guide on the journey.



Alex: I enjoyed your insights into the smell of Minecraft smells like. Netherrack, that was an eye-opener.



Max Brooks: Sarah Peed my editor is a true blessing. She inspired me to write the first book and asked me what the Island was like. What are the tastes of things? How does the breeze feel on your face? What is the grass like under your feet? I wanted the book to feel immersive, so I thought netherrack, it should smell sulfurous. It must smell like farts. Yes, you read that right! When you drink Night Vision, it should be a bit like a carrot soda, which is tangy and bubbly and a little bite on your tongue. I wanted people to feel as if they were there.
