15 Fun Facts About Minecraft

15 Fun Facts About Minecraft

If you're a huge fan or have one in your life, you've probably experienced at least an introductory encounter with Minecraft in the past. Here are some facts about the gaming juggernaut.

1. Minecraft's first version Minecraft was developed in only six days.

Markus Persson, a Swedish programmer and designer who was born in 2009, set out to create a sandbox-based gaming system that would allow free and organic exploration of an online world. This was for the launch of Mojang AB. Persson began working on the game that is now Minecraft on the 10th of May of the same year, and then modified the game in incremental increments up to May 16. The "alpha version" of Minecraft was released to the public the very next day.

2. Minecraft was not deemed to be complete for another two years.

Following Minecraft's release on PC, Mojang would periodically update and tweak the game until it was released as what they considered to be the complete version on November 18 November, 2011.

3. Minecraft's initial name was simpler.

When Minecraft's creator kicked off the development process, he referred to the project as Cave Game. The name was changed to Minecraft: Order of the Stone, and, ultimately, just Minecraft.

4. Minecraft was inspired by several other games.

Minecraft's creator has heralded PC video games Dwarf Fortress, Dungeon Keeper, RollerCoaster Tycoon, and Infiniminer as the primary inspirations for Minecraft. He has expressed particular esteem for Infiniminer saying that he wanted to match its aesthetic charm with RPG-style gameplay.

5. Creepers began as a coding mistake.

One of Minecraft's stranger native species is the creeper, a narcotic predator that has a spooky mug. The creator of Minecraft didn't intend to create such an animal. He was actually trying to create a pig but accidentally altered the figures to match his ideal size and length. The result was the monstrosity that players love and recognize.

6. Gamers believe that the Enderman language could be English in reverse (or pitched down) according to Gamers.

Another gruesome Minecraft species is the Enderman. Although the creature's language is difficult to understand for humans, some fans believe it's just English words and phrases. However, the game's creators have disproved this idea.

7. Ghasts are voiced by a cat asleep.

One other Minecraft monster owes its vocal rumblings to a real-world animal. Anyone playing Minecraft will recognize the high-pitched whine of the ghast, Minecraft's resident fire-breather in the form of a block. These sounds are the result of an accidental audio recording of Minecraft music producer Daniel "C418" Rosenfeld's cat, who was abruptly awakened from a nap.

8. Minecraft plays a major role in a Swedish school...

In 2013, the Viktor Rydberg secondary school in Stockholm introduced Minecraft as a mandatory part of its curriculum for all of its 13-year-old students. Minecraft is a great way to teach students about planning for the future, urban planning environmental issues, getting things done and how to think about the future.

9. But Minecraft is a bigger deal in Denmark.

Sweden's neighbor to the south has touted an even more impressive love affair with Minecraft. In 2014 the state employees Simon Kokkendorf and Thorbjorn Nielsen of the Danish Geodata Agency completed a scale replica of the entire country of Denmark in the game of digital world building to help drive interest in geographic data.

10. Minecraft's fame is a result of free marketing.

According to a study carried out by Annenberg School of Communication doctoral student Alex Leavitt one-third of early Minecraft users first heard about the game from friends and another third discovered the game through YouTube videos.

11. Despite its claim of an infinite space, Minecraft's world has seen its limits.

In 2011, Minecraft's creator posted on his personal blog to discuss the shortcomings of the endless world of Minecraft:

"Let me clarify a few things regarding the 'infinite maps: They aren't infinite, but there's no limit on the number of map units. It will just get more buggier the further you go. Terrain is generated, saved and loaded, and (kind of) rendered in blocks of 16*16*128. These chunks have an offset value of 32 bit integer, roughly in the range of negative 2 billion to positive two billion. minecraft-servers.biz If you go outside the range (about 25% of the distance from where you are now to the sun) saving and loading chunks will begin to overwrite old chunks. Things that make use of integers to determine the position of blocks (such as pathfinding or items) will overflow at 16/th of the distance.

12. A devoted fan decided to embark on an interminable quest.

Before experiencing serious glitches in their code, players were required to walk a significant distance (the digital equivalent of 7500 miles). This was the virtual desert known, appropriately, as the "Far Lands."

Right around the time of the blog post Gamer Kurt J. Mac decided to test the boundaries of Minecraft and set out to explore the Far Lands. The adventure began in March 2011. Don't dismiss it as a unnecessary effort; Mac has gained a lot of fame on YouTube and is still broadcasting his adventures and raising money for charity today. (The Far Lands were unfortunately removed in an update to the game in 2011. You'd need version 1.7.3 to follow in Mac's footsteps.

13. Minecraft's creator's avatar boasts a unique trait.

Appropriately enough, Minecraft's creator made a special feature available to his own avatar. His character was the only one to die from an apple drop in the early versions of Minecraft.

14. Minecraft's creator has opened auctions via a tweet.

In June 2014, Minecraft's creator posted a tweet in hopes to gauge the interest of any third parties interested in buying his Mojang shares. Three months later, he officially sold the company to Microsoft for $2.5 billion.

15. Every now and then, Minecraft gets its own name incorrectly.
