Microsoft recognizes that Minecraft can help kids get into programming, and it's banking on that strategy this year. The Minecraft Hour of Code Designer tutorial teaches children 6 years older to make an easy game. It was developed by Microsoft and Code.org. The Designer utilizes a drag-and drop interface to show familiar code concepts, such as loops and object-oriented programming, while letting your imagination play around in Minecraft's amorphous world. You can make chickens that drop gold, and other rules that are as sensible or absurd as you'd like.

The tutorial is currently available in 10 languages, and will be available in 50 languages when Computer Science Education Week begins on December 5th. Of course, this course isn't as simple as learning a programming language. However, Microsoft and Code.org are hoping that this will highlight the importance of code to children, and set some of them on a path to careers in computer science.
