Microsoft has Acquired Minecraft For $2.5 Billion.

Microsoft has confirmed that Mojang and Minecraft will join its ranks, but will continue to make the game available across iOS, Android and PlayStation as well as on Xbox and PC, the company announced today. Microsoft states that they began their conversation around making the game available on the Xbox console after which they saw their huge success and decided to acquire the game to "diversify its game offerings."

The team announced that Markus "Notch" Persson and Carl Manneh, founders of Mojang, have resigned from Mojang following the acquisition. Mojang's official website has confirmed that the purchase cost was $2.5 billion. In their blog post the Mojang community group says that Notch was hesitant to control such a globally influential company and would rather work on smaller projects. The decision sell was designed to allow Minecraft continue to grow, while allowing the founders to pursue their other interests.

Mojang has not provided any assurances as to the future plans for Minecraft however it has stated that it will continue its business as normal. Microsoft states that it "respect[s] Minecraft's brand and its independent spirit" and will continue projects such as MINECON the annual convention that focuses on the game that was created by Mojang in 2010.

Community response to this news is bound to be mixed. hardcore Minecraft fans who've been with the game since its infancy beginnings are likely to distrust its new corporate owners, but reasoning behind the purchase is solid. We'll get the chance to examine if Notch will be able to repeat the feat and also the next generation of Lego equivalents.

Here's Notch's thoughts on the deal, and his thoughts on leaving the company he built, from his blog which had crashed at the time of this writing. :

I'm leaving Mojang

A long time ago, I made the decision to step down from Minecraft development. Jens was the ideal person to lead the project and I was looking for to try something new. While I tried to make it big at first it ended up failing. However I've made the decision to stick to small prototypes, interesting challenges, and I have enjoyed so much doing my work, it's been a lot easier. I wasn't sure what my place was in Mojang where people actually did work, but since everyone said that I was an important part of the team for the culture, I stayed.

A couple of weeks ago, I was suffering from a severe cold at home and the internet went on a rage about me due to an EULA situation in which I had nothing. I was confused. I didn't understand. I was frustrated. Later, I watched the This is Phil Fish video and realized that I did not have the connection I believed I had with my fans. I have become an image. I do not want to be a symbol accountable for something that I don't understand or don't want to work on that keeps coming back to me. I'm not an entrepreneur. I'm not an executive chief. I'm a nerdy computer programmer who likes to have opinions on Twitter.

After the deal is concluded and I'm done, I'll be leaving Mojang to go back to web-based experiments and Ludum Dares. If I make a mistake and it gets traction, I'll probably drop the project immediately.

In light of the fact that my public image is somewhat skewed, I don't expect to be free of negative comments by doing this but at least I don't feel the need to read them.

This is in direct contradiction to my public statements. I don't have a good answer to that. I also know that many of you have used me as a symbol to represent some perceived struggle. I'm not. I'm a person , and I'm right there with you.

You are my best friend. Every one of you. I am grateful to you for making Minecraft what it is today. However, there are far too many of us and I can't be held accountable for something like this. In one sense, it's a part belonging to Microsoft currently. It's been a part of your lives for a long time, and will remain yours.

It's not about money. It's about my mental health.
