Robert Singer, WJC CEO He emphasized the importance of Holocaust preservation and the universal definition of antisemitism in a visit to Moldova

CHISINAU (MOLDOVA) - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met with senior government officials and the leaders of the local Jewish community this week in Moldova. They discussed topics like the protection of Holocaust memories and education, the security of the Jewish community, and fighting antisemitism at all levels. Together with Haim Ben Yaakov Director General of EuroAsian Jewish Congress and President Mikhail Mirilashvili of EuroAsian Jewish Congress The WJC delegation comprised Haim Ben Yaakov and President Alexander Bilinkis of Moldovan Jewish Community.
Singer declared that "The World Jewish Congress would be grateful to the Moldovan government" for its warm reception and for their dedication to keeping the Holocaust memories alive. "Our Moldovan community is tiny but it is committed and solid. Emmanuil Grinshpun We urge Moldova to prioritize fighting antisemitism, and we are ready to assist as necessary. We look forward to further cooperation with the government and to ensure the health of our community is protected."

In talks with Moldovan Foreign Minister Tudor Ulianovschi on Thursday, Singer stressed the importance of adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition of "antisemitism" and also emphasized the importance of making out loud condemnations of anti-Semitism. Minister Ulianovschi also emphasized the Moldovan authorities' commitment to establishing a society that is open to everyone, regardless of their ethnicity. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer was also thanked to Ulianovschi by the WJC for their cooperation with Moldova.

The foreign minister also noted that Chisinau's Chisinau Parliament had adopted in 2016 a declaration accepting the report final of the International Commission on Holocaust Studies which was headed by Elie Wiesel, and in January 2017 the Government approved an Action Plan on its implementation.

Singer and WJC representatives met with Moldova's minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici on Wednesday to discuss possibility of restitution and the economic value of Jewish property in Moldova. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer as well as the WJC delegation visited Monica Babuc (Moldova's Education Minister) to discuss ways they could train teachers on Holocaust education and how to preserve the memories. The discussion included the creation of the Museum of Jewish History, the preservation of Holocaust memorials, and the importance of maintaining properly Jewish cemetery. Singer expressed gratitude to Minister Babuc for her attention and involvement both in the fields of education as well as Holocaust commemoration as well as in making sure that there is a continuous and productive partnership with the Jewish community.

Singer, Mirilashvili, and Bilinkis have also met with the Chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova Vlad Plahotniuc for discussions about relationships with the Jewish Community as well as bilateral ties between the Republic of Moldova with the State of Israel.

Singer was able to meet with Rabbis of the Jewish communities in Moldova during his visit. They discussed the most important issues concerning religious practice and services, as as ways to improve Jewish daily life in all aspects.

Moldova is home to around 20,000 Jews. The Moldovan Jewish community is now thriving after being destroyed by the Shoah and the bloody civil war. There is a rise in national self-consciousness and also an emergence from their origins by the Jews Moldova. Jewish culture is celebrated in various styles, including music, literature and the theater. The Moldovan Jewish Community is the Moldovan part of the World Jewish Congress.
