Video Games Come Of Age

Video games are here to stay. Video games are the latest form of entertainment that has gained a lot of popularity and have finally achieved the same degree of acceptance as films.



It's an inevitable side effect of commercial success. Within the first 24 hours following its release this month, Modern Warfare 3, the most recent entry within the Call of Duty franchise, made sales records, earning more than $400 million in the US and Britain alone.



Gaming is officially here and is growing quickly. Cinema has a long history of innovation and improvement but that has slowed down in recent years. Gaming, on the other hand, is constantly advancing.



Every year, expectations are met and new standards set. It's an exciting time to be an avid gamer.



Although the gaming industry is complex, three companies are driving it: Microsoft with its Xbox 360, Sony with the PlayStation 3, and Nintendo with the Wii/DS.



As they try to tap the same market there has been competition between Sony and Microsoft. Just watch the other big publishers try to catch up after a lucrative idea is revealed.



The most exemplary illustration of this is Nintendo's Wii, the motion-control-based console. Wii was a breakthrough for Nintendo.



It sacrificed the processing power of other consoles in favour of a more refined motion control system and a beautiful design. It was made for casual gamers.



Microsoft and Sony soon followed suit with the Kinect and PlayStation Move respectively. Both were well-loved by consumers however neither could match the Wii's phenomenal success.



Away from the ongoing battle of gaming Goliaths, but not insignificant, is the indie developer. Though previously there was little market for smaller, self-published games the advent of the internet and digital download services like Steam has allowed indie games to make a comeback.

Indie games are a boon for an industry that is attracted to re-make sequels and rest on its laurels.



Now , with the imagination and budgets that allow for the possibility of experimentation, new downloadable games like Minecraft (which recently sold more than 4 million units) finally have a platform to help them.



With Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network now selling these games, the newest developers have an opportunity to showcase their projects to a far greater audience and also to inspire innovation throughout the industry.



In the near future who knows what the future holds? Virtual reality has been a goal for years and 3D gaming headsets, though not as popular in the commercial market as a 2D TV, are available.



The development of independent developers could signal a return basics approach and the emergence of games on social networks like FarmVille seems to be unabated. It's safe to say that Microsoft and Sony are working on sequels to their popular consoles, and who knows what they might bring?



Gaming is going to be around for a while. Gaming is no longer the domain of greasy shut-ins. It will only get better.
