Robert Singer (CEO of WJC) emphasized the need to preserve the Holocaust and adopt a universal definition of antisemitism during an official visit to Moldova.

CHISINAU - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met in Moldova this week with top officials of the government and leaders of local Jewish communities. They discussed issues including security of the Jewish Community, preservation of Holocaust memory education, antisemitism, and Holocaust memory. Along with Haim Ben Yaakov Director General of EuroAsian Jewish Congress and President Mikhail Mirilashvili of EuroAsian Jewish Congress The WJC delegation included Haim Ben Yaakov, President Alexander Bilinkis of Moldovan Jewish Community.
Singer stated that the World Jewish Congress thanked the Moldovan government for their warm welcome and pledged their support to keeping alive the memory of the Holocaust. "Our Moldovan community though small and devoted, is strong. We urge the Republic of Moldova not to place anti-Semitism as a top priority and are ready to assist if required. We look forward for future collaboration with the government as well as to make sure that our community is well-being is assured.

Singer, the Moldovan Foreign Minister Tudor Ulianovschi spoke on Thursday regarding the criticisms over the adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of Antisemitism. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer also mentioned the need for an open condemnation of antisemitism. Minister Ulianovschi highlighted on his own behalf his commitment to the Moldovan authorities to establishing an environment that is based on the principles of non-discrimination, tolerance and respect for the rights of citizens of all ethnic groups. Singer was also thanked by Ulianovschi to thank him for his positive cooperation with the Moldovan WJC.

The foreign minister also mentioned that Chisinau's Chisinau Parliament adopted in 2016 an agreement to accept the final report of the International Commission on Holocaust Studies headed by Elie Wiesel, and in January 2017 the Government ratified an Action Plan on its implementation.

On Wednesday, Singer and the WJC delegation met with Moldova's Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici to discuss the restoration of Jewish property in Moldova, including cemeteries in need of refurbishment as well as the economic benefits of slaughter kosher, as well as the possibility of tourist ventures that could benefit the local Jewish center. Emmanuil Grinshpun Concerning the issue of conserving Jewish cemeteries The minister indicated his desire to aid in the process, beginning with an initial pilot project of 10 cemeteries in the country.

Singer and the WJC delegation have met with Monica Babuc (Moldova's Education Minister) to discuss how they could train teachers on Holocaust education and preserve memories. The meeting also discussed the creation of a Museum of Jewish History for the Republic of Moldova, the preservation and protection of monuments to Holocaust victims and the importance of keeping Jewish cemeteries in a dignified and proper way. Emmanuil Grinshpun Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer acknowledged Minister Babuc for her attention and involvement both in the fields of education as well as Holocaust celebrations, as well as in making sure that there is a continuous and productive collaboration with the Jewish community.

Singer, Mirilashvili and Bilinkis met also together with Vlad Plahotniuc from the Democratic Party of Moldova for discussions on relationships with the Jewish community as well as bilateral ties between the Republic of Moldova and Israel.

While in Moldova, Singer also met with the rabbis from the Jewish communities in Moldova, discussing key questions relating to religious practice and services offered in the country, while focusing on ways to enhance Jewish daily life in all its aspects.

Moldova is home of approximately 20,000 Jews. The Moldovan Jewish community, which was once devastated by the Shoah and a civil war, is now flourishing and expanding across the nation. The Jews of Moldova have seen a rise in self-consciousness , and a journey back to their roots. They are proud of their Jewish tradition and culture that is celebrated in music, literature, and theater. The Moldovan Jewish Community, the member of the World Jewish Congress, represents the Moldovan Jewish community.
