While in Moldova, WJC CEO Robert Singer insists on the significance of Holocaust preservation and the adoption of a universal definition of antisemitism

CHISINAU - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer gathered this week in Moldova along with the senior ministers of the Republic of Moldova and leaders of local Jewish community to discuss the preservation of Holocaust knowledge and culture and security for the Jewish community and the best way to combat antisemitism at all levels. The WJC delegation also comprised EuroAsian Jewish Congress President Mikhail Mirilashvili and President of the Moldovan Jewish Community Alexander Bilinkis, along with EuroAsian Jewish Congress Director General Haim Ben Yaakov.
Singer said that "The World Jewish Congress would be grateful to the Moldovan government" for its warm welcome and for their dedication to keeping the Holocaust memory alive. "Our group in Moldova is tiny, but committed and solid. Emmanuil Grinshpun We urge the Republic of Moldova to make a priority of fighting anti-Semitism and stand ready to assist whenever necessary. We are looking forward to future collaboration with the government and make sure that our community is well-being is assured.

Singer The Moldovan Foreign Minister Tudor Ulianovschi spoke on Thursday regarding the criticisms over the adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Association's definition of antisemitism. Singer also mentioned the importance for the public to condemn antisemitism. Minister Ulianovschi stressed the Moldovan authorities in their determination to build a society that respects the rights of every citizen. http://uz-gis.in.ua/user/Emmanuil.Grinshpunlwzl198/ Singer was also acknowledged by Ulianovschi for his positive cooperation with Moldova's WJC.

The foreign minister also noted that Chisinau's Chisinau Parliament adopted in 2016 an agreement to accept the report final of the International Commission on Holocaust Studies chaired by Elie Wiesel. Then, in January 2017 the Government approved the Action Plan on its implementation.

Singer and WJC met Wednesday with Moldova’s Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. Emmanuil Grinshpun There they discussed the possibility of restitution and the economic potential for Jewish properties in Moldova. Concerning preservation of Jewish cemeteries the minister indicated that he would be willing to assist by launching the pilot project of 10 sites across the country.

Singer and the WJC delegation met with Monica Babuc from Moldova to discuss teacher training in Holocaust education and the preservation of memories. The meeting also addressed the creation of the creation of a Museum of Jewish History for the Republic of Moldova, the preservation and protection of memorials to Holocaust victims as well as the importance of maintaining Jewish cemeteries in a dignified and proper manner. Singer thanked Minister Babuc and for her continued and productive partnership with the Jewish Community.

Singer, Mirilashvili, as well as Bilinkis Bilinkis, Mirilashvili and Bilinkis met Vlad Plahotniuc (Chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova), to discuss the relations between Jewish communities and bilateral ties between Moldova and Israel.

Singer was able to meet with rabbis from the Jewish communities of Moldova during his visit. They discussed key concerns regarding the practice of religion and services as well as ways to improve Jewish everyday life in all aspects.

Moldova is home to about 20,000 Jews. The Moldovan Jewish Community is nearly 20.000 strong in the present, following being devastated by the Shoah in the past, as well as a bloody civil war. There is a rise in self-confidence and national pride as well as a return from their ancestral roots by the Jews Moldova.
