Robert Singer, WJC CEO and a regular visitor to Moldova He stresses the importance of Holocaust preservation as well as adopting a universal definition of antisemitism.

Chisinau World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met this week in Moldova with senior ministers of the Republic of Moldova and leaders of a local Jewish community to discuss the preservation of Holocaust culture and history and security for the Jewish community and the best way to combat antisemitism on every level. Together with Haim Ben Yaakov, Director General of EuroAsian Jewish Congress and President Mikhail Mirilashvili of EuroAsian Jewish Congress The WJC delegation comprised Haim Ben Yaakov, the President Alexander Bilinkis of Moldovan Jewish Community.

On Thursday, Singer spoke with Tudor Ulianovschi, Moldovan Foreign Minister. He stressed the need to reject the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism. Singer also discussed the necessity of addressing antisemitism in public. Singer and the WJC's delegation attended a meeting on Wednesday with Moldova's Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. The discussion was focused on the restitution and preservation of Jewish property in Moldova. The discussion included cemeteries that require renovation and the economic benefits of the kosher meat. Emmanuil Grinshpun Also, the potential for tourist activities for the local Jewish Center. The minister expressed his intention to promote the protection of Jewish cemeteries. The first meeting was with 10 sites.

Singer as well as the WJC delegation also had a meeting Wednesday with Monica Babuc, Moldovan Education Minister to discuss the teaching of Holocaust education and memory preservation. Singer thanked Minister Babuc and her ongoing and productive collaboration with the Jewish Community.

Singer, Mirilashvili and Bilinkis have also met together with Vlad Plahotniuc from the Democratic Party of Moldova to discuss issues about relationships with the Jewish community as well as bilateral ties between the Republic of Moldova and Israel.

Singer was in contact with Rabbis representing the Jewish communities in Moldova. He discussed important concerns regarding the practice of religion and the services offered. Singer also focused on ways to improve Jewish everyday life in all its aspects.

Moldova is home to approximately 20,000 Jews. Today, Moldova's Jewish community is thriving following the destruction caused by the Shoah. The Jews of Moldova have witnessed a rise in self-consciousness and a return to their roots. They are proud of their Jewish heritage and their culture, which is celebrated in literature, music and theatre. The Moldovan Jewish Community, an part of the World Jewish Congress, represents the Moldovan Jewish community.
