New Minecraft Skins With Default Minecraft Skins Recall Steve's Beard

Mojang has changed the default Minecraft skins to Steve and Alex and Minecraft Steve's beard is back after years sporting a clean-shaven look. The iconic blue-shirted avatar of the crafting game Minecraft Steve's first avatar had a brown goatee - which some players mistakenly thought was smiling eyes - however it was removed in a bid to provide a more gender neutral appearance for the sandbox game's default character.

With a green top and a longer red hair tied into a ponytail, Alex offers a slightly more feminine appearance than Steve's model. With two choices available to players, the decision has been taken to bring back Steve's iconic goatee. The new skins were praised in a Minecraft subreddit post. They also enhance Alex's shading, giving the second character model an authentic, three-dimensional appearance. The response has been mostly positive, with many fans excited to see Steve's original beard back.



Many commenters claimed that Steve is now in line with official art, including the appearance of the character in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. "I understand why they initially removed it," says the most popular comment in the Reddit thread at the time of writing, "but it was clearly a big element of Steve's design and it seems that Mojang also agrees. Glad to see it officially back after all these years."



Minecraft lead artist Jasper Boerstra took to Twitter to discuss the change and said, "I'm happy you like the beard's return!" Boerstra also notes that some classic bands and 'pillow shading' techniques are utilized in the new skins "to give a little of that OG jankiness," but asks players for their thoughts on whether this decision is an appropriate choice or not.
