'Minecraft Earth' will Shut down On June 30th

A little over a year after bringing Minecraft Earth in the US, Microsoft announced this week that it will end the game in the coming year. Minecraft Earth players have until June 30th, 2021, to play the augmented reality game before Microsoft shuts down its servers, and it's no longer available for download through app marketplaces.



Developer Mojang Studios attributed the shutdown to the coronavirus epidemic and all the changes in daily life that it's brought with it. Electric jack "Minecraft Earth was created around playing with no restrictions and in a collaborative manner and collaboration - two things that have become near impossible in the current climate," the studio said. Like Niantic with Pokemon Go, Mojang had tweaked the game to make it easier to play at home. Evidently, these tweaks were not enough.

- Minecraft (@Minecraft) on January 5, 2021. But there is an upside to today's news: Mojang plans on presenting Minecraft Earth in style. The studio has released a final update to Minecraft Earth. It includes modifications that "make your time on Minecraft Earth more fun." The update also eliminates real-money transactions, and dramatically reduces the time it takes to build and craft items in the game. The update also gives players a chance to see the entire content Mojang was working on prior to the announcement today. "We believe these changes will allow players to explore, create and create more - all while staying safe indoors," the studio said.



Microsoft will delete player information on July 1 after June 30th is finished. You'll receive a token if you make purchases in Minecraft Earth during the game's existence. This token will enable you to download the Bedrock version of Minecraft on your phone. More details about the closure can be found on the Minecraft website.



It's a disappointing end for Minecraft Earth for Microsoft. When we first saw the game in action at WWDC 2019 it was clear the company had high hopes for the game. It's not a great indication for consumers using AR applications in the near future that Minecraft Earth was unable to beat the virus with all the resources Microsoft has.



Mojang has stated that they will always be grateful for the incredible talent of the Minecraft community. "This was not an easy decision, and we're doing everything we can to ensure you get the most out of Minecraft Earth before it sunsets."
