August 29, 2022 Irish ace Ciara Mageean wants to come away from Paris 2024 Olympics in happy place as she aims to set record straight CIARA MAGEEAN has admitted that setting her Olympic record straight is a key motivation before she ends her career.
This summer, Mageean underlined her class by taking silver in the 1500m in both the Commonwealth Games and European Championships.

It was the second time she had claimed a podium finish in the Europeans, having taken bronze six years ago.
She has proven herself on the global stage too, by finishing tenth in the World Championships in 2019 in a new personal best.
Throw in her performances in youth and junior championships, in indoor and cross country, and it is clear her ability is not in doubt.
Unfortunately, however, she has been unable to perform as she would have wished at either the Rio or Tokyo Games.
In 2016, she was 11th in her semi-final. Five years later she did not even get that far.
A badly-timed injury saw her come tenth in her heat, more than seven seconds slower than her career best.
And, as she savours her most recent accomplishments, she is also eyeing up the next challenges, all of which serve as stepping stones for Paris 2024.
Mageean, 30, said: “For the next two years there will be a big push, with the World Championships the main focus next year.
“I opted out this summer purely because I felt I had a realistic medal goal in the Commonwealth and Europeans and I’m glad to say I fulfilled that.
“Now I have put the focus on the Worlds next summer, being back on the line and making that final.
“I definitely believe I was in shape to be a finalist this summer but obviously I focused on the other two Championships.
“That is next year’s focus but cross-country and indoors are also important. The outdoor season is where all my main goals are but I would love to get back out in the European Cross-Country Championships.
“I have a love-hate relationship with cross country but I do love to hate it. I’m a glutton for punishment and I try to make the cross-country team every year and I definitely will this winter.
“European Indoors, that will be a big aim next year, because I feel I can medal there — then the World Championships next summer and then the Olympics.
“I aim to stay consistent and healthy, have a few years of consistency, knocking out similar races and to be competitive on the world stage regularly is the aim for where I want to be.

“I was disappointed in the previous two Olympic Games and I certainly want to come away from Paris in a happier place.”
Mageean tore her calf a week before Tokyo after what had already been a hugely difficult year following the passing of her coach Jerry Kiernan.
And her injury problems did not clear up afterwards either, which makes her silverware all the more impressive.
She said: “I had a rocky build-up to the winter. I had to have an injection in my knee before Euro Cross, then tore my calf in January as soon as they opened the indoor season.
“Then I had an injection in my ankle, went off to camp and ended up getting Covid-19. But I just kept trucking on because you can’t dwell on the negatives, you have to keep moving forward.” It is not the first time she has encountered testing times, as she pointed out when asked if the more recent success meant more than that achieved six years ago.
She said: “It’s strange, people tell you you’re fantastic because you didn’t give up but it was never a battle for me so I don’t know why I’d be praised for it. I never thought about stopping.
“Winning bronze in 2016 was a big comeback for me, my first major medal as a senior for Ireland. I came from that glistening underage career where everyone had me dubbed as the next Sonia O’Sullivan, and the pressure that comes with that.
“Then I got injured and didn’t race at Under-23s so that was a huge space without actually having an Irish vest.
“So to come out in 2016 and to finally get a medal was hugely special.
“I suppose I had a similarly rocky journey towards these Championships.
“I don’t know which I’d say was more special — currently, probably this one because it’s a lot closer.
“This summer has been really special, to be able to medal twice is really something.
“Being from the North and being able to medal for Northern Ireland and Ireland is a lovely thing to do in one summer.
“To be able to represent both is fantastic, I feel hugely privileged to do it.
“I’m very clearly a proud Irishwoman but I’m also proud to be from the North so it’s really nice to be able to do that.
“But both had very special moments and I shared the last one with Jerry, which was hugely special.
“Quite often my mind goes to those who I can’t share those moments with. Jerry is one of the first people who comes to mind, as well as my granny Kathleen, who I know would have absolutely loved to see me race. And I’ve a grandfather who never saw me race because he passed away when I was 13.
“If he knew I was running for Ireland, the pride he would have . . . running around with a tricolour over my shoulder, bringing a medal back home.”
Mageean thrives on the feedback she gets on how she is inspiring others to take an interest in or take up athletics.
But, while the Portaferry woman insisted she was never burdened by those O’Sullivan comparisons, she admitted she winces when she sees young athletes likened to those who have gone before.
She said: “I feel like comparisons are always drawn no matter what. That’s just the nature of our sport. I’m obviously racing the same races as Sonia
“Whenever I see someone doing it to a young athlete now, I get a little bit annoyed on their behalf.
“I’m like, ‘It’s not fair, let them travel on their path — not everybody’s journey is the same’ and our sport has enough pressures without adding more.
“I don’t feel I felt a huge amount of pressure, I always felt honoured to be compared to such an athlete as Sonia and I always aim to fill those expectations but nobody has larger expectations than I do for myself.
“I’ve never let it weigh on me too heavily but I do think when I see it with other athletes that there’s no need to have comparisons for them.”
