'Minecraft' now has 112 million Monthly Players

Fortnite may still be the most played game however that doesn't mean it's affecting other gaming phenomenons. Microsoft's Helen Chiang told Business Insider in an interview that Minecraft now has 112 million active users each month, an increase of 20 million over figures from October 2018. This includes all players, including players who play through an Xbox Game Pass. However it's still an incredible achievement for an app that's been in existence for about 10 years.



Chiang explained it as an attribute of the innovative game's enduring popularity -- it's a title that players "keep coming back to." You may fire up Fortnite or any other game that get the spotlight, but there's a real chance you'll return to building tunnels and homes in Minecraft after that.



Other factors could be crucial too. On top of its sheer popularity across platforms, Minecraft's unwieldy graphics and basic mechanics make it easy to play on low-end devices, whether it's a budget PC or a smartphone. You can still have an enjoyable experience with a modest investment in hardware.

Microsoft's goal is to keep the game relevant. The augmented reality feature of Minecraft Earth helps, as do ray-tracing and other efforts to improve the appearance. It's unclear if that's enough, however. Roblox recently reached 100 million monthly players, and Fortnite may be close (it reported 78.3million players in August 2018). It might not take much for other games to be able to capture the cultural zeitgeist.
