Avanos Medical, a U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) company, is recalling Cortrak*2 enteral access device because of a misplaced nasoenteric tube or nasogastric tubs that could have led to injuries or even patient deaths. The recall currently includes 629 devices distributed across the United States.
Avanos Medical feeding tube Avanos offers the Cortrak*2 enteral access system for its visualisation of the patient's small bowel and stomach, which assists in the placement of a medical feeding tube. Cortrak 2 eternal access system Patients can suffer from damage to their vocal chords or trachea, if the tube was installed in a wrong way. Avanos Medical's recall notification states that, since 2015 there were 60 deaths of patients and 23 injuries resulting from incorrect placement of nasogastric feed tubes using the CORTRAK*2 access system. The injuries can be described as respiratory failure, pneumothorax and perforation. These are all types of lung collapse.
Avanos Medical Avanos Medical has presented a plan to provide users updated labels, to ensure the proper place of the nasogastric (and nasoenteric) tubes prior to using them.
Cortrak 2 eternal access system The Avanos warning is the second caution the FDA issued in 2022 about enteral feeding tubes. The FDA cautioned parents and healthcare professionals about the risk of strangulation among children who use feeding tubes. Two cases of strangulation by a child occurred in 2021. The reason for this was a tubing system placed around the neck of one of the patients.
