The dividing line between punk and alternative can be a thin one, especially for late 70s and early 80s bands. Its roots are in the late 60s and 70s and rose to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s. Alternative bands usually arise on independent record labels and often are hard to pin down in terms of mainstream genre.
