The planets have aligned and I've re-entered Minecraft. Every now and then I'm compelled to contact a few friends and create a server, and spend a few hours each week building up crazy things and fighting for survival in a blocky world. Usually hosting the server on my laptop, however this time I wanted to try something new (read more complex). I am a programmer and have the power of cloud computing at my disposal , so why not spin up Linode instances and host the server there?
The first night, I made the terrible mistake of trying to use my existing Linode instance to host the server. A paltry 1 core, 1GB memory machine can run a nice static website, but it's terrible in running a gaming server. Minecraft If you want your server to constantly crash and eventually run out of memory, then that's the method you should try
Linode's 4 core and 4GB memory instances are recommended for those who want to actually play the game. If you don't plan to have many players playing on the server simultaneously it will be plenty. The good thing is that these instances cost $0.06/hour. Last night I was with a friend for four hours and it cost me a whole 24Cper hour.
I've written a little shell script to perform the installation for me, and even sign the EULA. Now, whenever I want to play with some friends, I just need to select three buttons in the Linode administration panel, SSH into the server, run my script and begin playing. When we're done, I can transfer the entire world onto my Mac via FTP and then shut down the instance. It's easy, cheap and quick.
