Avanos Medical, a U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) company is recalling Cortrak*2 enteral access device because of a misplaced nasoenteric tube or nasogastric tubs, which could have led to injuries or even death of patients. Avanos Medical The recall currently includes 629 devices distributed throughout the United States.
Avanos marketing its Cortrak*2 Endural Access System has been primarily for its screen-based visualizations of stomachs and small bowels, which assist in the placement medical feed tubes. Avanos Medical recalls that there are sixty accidents, 23 deaths, and 23 illnesses that were caused by the incorrect placement or accidental insertion of a nasogastric feeding tube using the CORTRAK*2 Enteral Access System. There have been several injuries, including pneumothorax, respiratory failure or collapsed lung perforation (a opening in the wall of your lungs or bowel) pneumonia, and the pleural effusion. This is excess fluid between your lungs and your chest cavity.

The Avanos warning is the second warning the FDA issued in 2022 concerning the use of enteral feeding tubes. In February, parents and healthcare professionals were informed by the FDA regarding the risk of strangulation of children with feeding tubes. Two deaths due to strangulation in children was reported in 2021 as a result of the tube being tied around the neck of a child.
