Minecraft Owner Bans In-game NFTs in Order to Discourage Profiteering

Minecraft developer Mojang Studios is taking a strong stance against NFTs. COHUNE.COM The studio, which is owned by Microsoft and Microsoft, has declared that the integration of NFTs into Minecraft are not something they would allow or support.

"To ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technology is not allowed to be used inside our client and server applications, nor may Minecraft game-specific content, such as skins, worlds, persona items, or any other mods, be used by blockchain technology to create a precious digital asset," Mojang said.

According to Mojang, some companies have developed "NFT implementations that are bundled with Minecraft world files and skin packs." The studio suggests that there might be Minecraft "collectible" NFTs or that players can earn NFTs by doing things in Minecraft on a server or earning them outside of the game.

Mojang claims that these practices promote digital exclusion and scarcity, which goes against the values of Minecraft. "NFTs are not inclusive of all our community and create a situation of the haves and have-nots," the studio said. Mojang goes further by declaring that the speculative nature of NFTs "encourages profiteering."

I strongly encourage you to read the blog post in full because it concisely spells out a variety of critiques of NFTs and blockchain-related projects in a way that's easy to comprehend. (There are many additional quotes I could have included.)

Valve has also taken a strong stand against NFTs and blockchain-based games on Steam. A majority gamers have opposed NFTs. Ubisoft stopped making NFTs to Ghost Recon Breakpoint only a few months after the initiative was launched. Epic Games stated last year that it is "open" for blockchain games on Epic Games Store. The store launched its first blockchain-based game in June.

While Mojang doesn't completely shut the possibility of incorporating blockchain in the future, it ends by declaring that "we have no plans of using blockchain technology in Minecraft as of now."
