Minecraft And NFTs

Recently, we've received some feedback from our community members asking for clarification and transparency regarding Mojang Studios and Minecraft's position on NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and blockchain.

While we are currently working on updating our Minecraft Usage Guidelines to provide more specific guidelines on the latest technologies, we want to use this opportunity to share our view that integrations of NFTs with Minecraft are not something we support or allow. Let's take a closer look.

WHAT IS A NFT?

An NFT is an unique, non-editable digital token that is part of a blockchain , and is often purchased using cryptocurrency like Bitcoin. An NFT can be associated to any digital asset, including an MPEG and a GIF. However digital art such as JPEGs is the most popular application for an NFT. The purchase of an NFT is a token that proves ownership of the original digital file. However, as with any digital file, that file can be copied, moved or even deleted. NFTs and Blockchain have been associated with speculation. This is where prices can go up quickly and, as we've seen, may fall quickly.

What are the implications for me?

If you're a creator who is actively involved in the trading, buying, or selling of trading of NFTs which make use of Minecraft (like skins or worlds), we strongly suggest you go through the information below. If you don't then these changes won't impact your game.

Our NFT POLICY AND MINECRAFT

In our Minecraft Usage Guidelines, we explain how a server's owner can charge for access, and how everyone has access to the same functionality. These rules are in place to ensure Minecraft remains an open community that gives everyone access to the same content. NFTs may, however, create scarcity and exclusion models which are not in line with our guidelines as well as the spirit and intent of Minecraft.

To ensure that Minecraft players enjoy a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated inside our client and server applications. Neither can Minecraft in-game content , such as worlds, skins, persona items, and other mods, be used by blockchain technology to create a scarce digital asset. Our reasons are as follows.

Some companies have recently launched NFT implementations that are associated with Minecraft world skin packs and files. Other examples of how NFTs and blockchain could be used with Minecraft include creating Minecraft collectible NFTs that allow players to earn NFTs by performing activities on a server, or earning Minecraft NFT rewards for doing activities outside the game.

Each of these uses for NFTs and other Blockchain technologies results in digital ownership that is dependent on scarcity or the exclusion of. This is not in line with Minecraft values of inclusion through creativity, playing together, and sharing resources. NFTs do not include all members of our community and create a situation of the haves and the not-so-haves. NFTs encourage profit-seeking and speculative pricing which we believe is not compatible with long-term joy and success for our players.

We are also concerned about third-party NFTs not being secure and could result in a cost to those who purchase them. Certain third-party NFT implementations are dependent on blockchain technology and could require an asset manager who might disappear without notice. There have instances where NFTs were sold at fraudulently or artificially price increases. We are aware that the creation process within our game is of great value, and we strive to provide a platform in which those values can be acknowledged.

As such, to ensure that Minecraft players enjoy a secure and inclusive experience, blockchain technology is not allowed to be integrated inside our Minecraft client and server applications, nor can they be utilized to create NFTs for any in-game content, like skins, worlds, items, or any other mods. We will also keep track of the development of blockchain technology in the future to ensure that the above principles are not infringed upon and to determine if it will provide more secure experiences or other practical games that are inclusive. We do not have any plans to incorporate blockchain technology into Minecraft as of now.

We'll have more to discuss with you in the near future. In the meantime, if you're interested in reading more on our guidelines they can be found here. Keep an eye out!
