When the mobile-based Minecraft Earth was announced last year, it immediately drew comparisons to Pokemon Go because of its use of virtual reality and activities that are based on location. Just another wordpress site But it was a different game (as senior editor Jess Conditt will attest) because it didn't require players to go outside to partake in the mining and building game. Now, Mattel has added another game element to Minecraft Earth that Pokemon Go can't really boast of: NFC-enabled figurines.

The Boost Mini figurines are priced at $5 each, and feature several characters from the Minecraft franchise which includes Steve, Alex, creepers ducks, cows, and creepers. Each figurine is cute on its own. If you place it in the vicinity of an NFC-enabled device, special abilities will be available within Minecraft Earth for a specified time. The duration will be displayed by a timer. You'll also get XP for registering the mini with the game as an additional incentive to collect all of them (or take them away from friends).
The first batch that will be released this spring features 20 minis in total, each with 10 different abilities to pick from. If you're someone who plans to take your Minecraft Earth game out and about, Mattel is also selling a carrying case with a shape like a potion that can be clipped to your belt.
Mattel introduced new $3.50 blind-box minis that are themed to vanilla Minecraft. They also have larger figures of 3.5 inches that connect with the upcoming Minecraft Dungeons. The Redstone Monstrosity is particularly enjoyable as it's sized to match the size of the toys, measuring over six inches tall. The 3.5-inch figurines cost $10 and the monstrosity is expected to retail for $25 when it is released in the fall.
