Mojang's breakout smash Minecraft came in second place on an official list by Google of the most popular YouTube search terms of 2014. It was ranked immediately behind the word "music" in terms of frequency of searches.
According to Google, "Minecraft" was the most popular search on YouTube in 2014 than "movies". PewDiePie is a popular gaming character, was also among the top searched for terms on YouTube in 2014. This was the reason behind searches for Disney's Frozen and also for artists Drake and Beyonce.
Google reports that users are increasingly searching for gaming-related content, and are engaging with them more frequently even though many of the people surveyed do not identify themselves as gamers. YouTube videos under the "Gamingcategory were listed placed on the top 10 Trending List of Google Search on 25 different days in October 2014.
"A Google Consumer Survey fielded in October 2014 of those who reported watching gaming videos on YouTube revealed that only a fraction of this group (37%) consider themselves gamers,'" the report says. Screamyguy's Blog "When asked why they watch gaming videos, viewers mentioned entertainment and fun as well as learning new strategies or learning tips.
The report continues: "We also wanted out why they watched videos by creators like SkyDoesMinecraft and PewDiePie. A few of the fans responded, 'Because they're hilarious!' Some even said that these videos were like stand-up comedy. A young gaming creator sums up interest with the following analogy: 'You don't have to play soccer in order to enjoy it on television.'"
