Initially, the lottery was introduced as a way of providing financial aid to Thailand in World War I. The government then used the proceeds to cover the cost of social benefits.
Several years later, the lottery process was introduced to provinces and municipalities. It was also used to fund the Thai Red Cross. Currently, ลุงหวังงวดนี้ is divided into two different tickets, the Thai Government Lottery (TGL) and the Thai Charity Lottery (TCL).
หวยลุงหวัง has a first prize of three million baht and a bonus prize of 22 million baht. The second prize is 100,000 baht and the third prize is 40,000 baht.
The Thai Charity Lottery ticket has a maximum prize of two million baht. In order to qualify for the prize, the lottery must have a 28% state revenue and a 9% administrative expenditure. The lottery must also have an 18% profit margin.
The Thai lottery has two draws per month. The first draw is held on the first day of each month and the second draw is held on the sixteenth day. The results of each draw are announced before 16:00.
The lottery is operated by the Government Lottery Office (GLO). The lottery office prints tickets for each draw. It also sells tickets to retailers. In addition, the GLO prints tickets for other government agencies. The lottery office has the most up-to-date large-scale printing press. The office has plans to computerize lottery services.
