The lack of empathy in some people is a genetic trait. Other factors include early experiences during infancy and childhood, impediments in stimulus-reinforcement learning, and socialization. The lack of empathy in some people is a serious problem, leading to constant friction in relationships and the absence of meaningful bonds. Fortunately, there are several ways to improve our level of empathy. Here are a few:
Lack of empathy is a result of genetics
The study examined data from 46,861 participants who took the online test EQ. In addition to this data, they collected saliva samples for genetic analysis. The researchers found that empathy is not genetically determined, and that it could be influenced by social conditioning and the hormonal environment in the womb. They also found that women tend to be more empathetic than men. Nevertheless, the study does raise some questions.
Zero Empathy Net analyzed a large number of twins in an effort to identify genes associated with empathy. While these studies did not look at the entire human genome, the results suggested that these genes accounted for up to one-third of the variance in empathy between twins. They also found that individuals with low levels of empathy had an increased risk of developing autism, a condition whereby people struggle to understand other people's emotions. Furthermore, people with lower empathy levels also had increased risks of schizophrenia and anorexia.
Early experiences in infancy and childhood
The study's main findings show that affective empathy and prosocial behaviors are not directly affected by ELS, a form of early experience in infancy and childhood. Empathy can be taught to children in various ways, depending on their age. Some parents use books about empathy to spark conversations with their children. Others use the books to encourage discussion about characters, emotions, and similar situations. The researchers have some suggestions on how parents can help their children develop empathy in their own lives.
Reactive young children who experience chronic adversity are more likely to develop anxiety disorders later in life. Additional neural nodes may be activated during the first years of life, reflecting over-mentalizing and ruminating during distressful experiences. Negative experiences in childhood may also affect neuronal networks for aversive stimuli, such as war, which increase higher-order processing and automatic sensory processing in response to distress. The research also found that war-related trauma altered neural networks for aversive stimuli, such as stress and fear regulation.
Socialization
A person with a zero empathy quotient has a hard time understanding others. Empathy is a skill that comes with understanding others' feelings and situations. It is the basis for many human qualities, including empathy. Without empathy, people lack the ability to empathize with other people and may not help others who are suffering. Sadly, this lack of empathy affects individuals, groups, societies, and governments.
While there is a genetic component to empathy, it is also influenced by the environment, parenting, schools, and culture. Children from countries that are at peace and prospering in the economy display higher empathy. The context is important as well, but there is no definitive relationship between genes and empathy. Therefore, we cannot say that a certain level of empathy is necessary for all human beings. We need to look into the socialization of zero empathy in children to find out if it can be trained in a classroom environment.
