Epic Games 'definitely Won't' Follow Minecraft NFT Ban

Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney says his firm "definitely will not" follow Minecraft developers in banning nonfungible tokens (NFTs).

As previously reported, Minecraft developers Mojang Studios have banned NFT integrations on Wednesday since it believes the speculative element of NFTs as well as the risk of exclusion as well as scams associated with NFTs being incompatible with the game's rules.

The move was viewed as highly controversial in the NFT community, while it has been met with praise by the community of crypto-skeptic gamers.

The company of Sweeney is the creators of the widely successful battle royale game Fortnite, which is also thought of as a Metaverse platform. Although Epic Games isn't necessarily pro-crypto or NFTs, the CEO stated that Epic Games doesn't intend to enforce any views regarding the subject on its users:

Developers should be free to choose how they build their games, and you are free to decide whether to play them. I don't think that stores or operating system makers should force their opinions on other players. We won't.

In response to the post, Twitter user Low5ive asked Sweeney if Epic Games' policy on prohibiting "hateful/discriminatory content" differs from this. In response, Sweeney suggested that Epic Games does make "editorial" judgements, however NFTs don't currently fall under the umbrella of.

"A store can choose to avoid making such decisions and play anything that's legal, or choose to draw a line at mainstream acceptable norms as we do, or accept only games that conform to the individual beliefs of the owner," he said.

The NFT ban by Mojang Studios has left one particular project dubbed NFT Worlds with a major issue to solve, considering that it was developed on one of Minecraft's open source servers.

The community-driven play-to earn (P2E) platform has an entire crypto and NFT ecosystem built around it and its NFTs producing 51,000 Ether (ETH) which is $80.8 million worth of trading volume as of the time of writing. However, its NFT floor price has fallen from 3.33 ETH to 1.01 ETH since news came out. While its native token WRLD dropped 55% during that time period.

The NFT Worlds team said that it is currently "brainstorming" solutions to the Mojang announcement. The team also said that they are working to connect with Minecraft to determine if a solution is possible. In the event of a solution the team suggested a pivot to a GameFi platform or a similar to Minecraft game engine.
