When the mobile-based Minecraft Earth was announced last year, it immediately drew comparisons to Pokemon Go because of its use of Augmented Reality and location-based games. It was quite different as senior editor Jess Conditt can attest, since you didn't have to go outside to participate in the mining and building activities. Now, Mattel has added another fun aspect to Minecraft Earth that Pokemon Go isn't able to boast of: NFC-enabled figurines.

The Boost Mini figures are $5 each and will feature various characters from Minecraft such as Steve, Alex and creepers, ducks, cows, and ducks. Each figurine is adorable on its own. However, if you hold it up to an NFC-enabled gadget, special abilities will be granted within Minecraft Earth for a specified period of. This timer is displayed on the screen. You'll also earn XP for registration of the mini with the game, as an additional incentive to collect them all (or take them away from friends).
This spring's first batch includes 20 minis with 10 abilities. And, if you are someone who plans to take your Minecraft Earth game out and out, Mattel is also selling a potion-shaped carrying case that clips onto your belt.
Minecraft Servers
If you're not interested in the game in particular but want to experience that delicious Minecraft toy fun, Mattel also announced a bunch of brand new $3.50 blind box minis that are themed to the classic Minecraft as well as larger 3.5-inch figures that will be part of the forthcoming Minecraft Dungeons. The Redstone Monstrosity which measures over six inches tall, is especially enjoyable because it's sized to match those toys. The 3.5-inch figurines will cost $10, with the monstrosity going for $25 when it's launched in the fall.
