Microsoft Has Acquired Minecraft For $2.5 Billion
Microsoft has confirmed that Mojang and Minecraft will join its ranks, but will continue to offer the game across iOS, Android and PlayStation as well as on Xbox and PC the company announced today. Microsoft says that they started discussions about making the game available on the Xbox console after which they saw their tremendous success and made the decision to purchase the game to "diversify its game collection."
The team announced that Markus "Notch" Persson and Carl Manneh, founders of Mojang, have quit the company following the acquisition. Mojang's official website has confirmed that the purchase price was $2.5 billion. Guimods.com In their blog post, the Mojang community team states that Notch did not want to be a part of this hugely powerful company, and would prefer to work on smaller projects. The decision sell was designed to allow Minecraft continue to grow while freeing up the original team to pursue other pursuits.
Mojang makes no assurances about the specific plans for the future the future for Minecraft however, it states that for now it should remain the same as it is now. Microsoft says it "respect[sthe brand and the spirit of independence" of Minecraft and will continue to work on projects like MINECON which is the annual event focused on the game begun by Mojang in the year 2010.
Community response to this news is bound to be mixed, and the most dedicated Minecraft players who have been playing the game since its infancy beginnings will likely be wary of its new corporate owners However, the logic behind the purchase is solid. At the very least, we'll get the chance to test whether Notch can replicate the success of the next generation's Lego similar game.
Here's Notch's thoughts on the deal, and on his decision to leave the company he founded, from his blog which had crashed at the time of this writing. :
Mojang is leaving me.
I do not consider myself a game developer. I create games for fun, and also because I love games and am a programmer however I don't create games with the intention of them becoming huge successes and I don't attempt to make a difference in the world. People are exclaiming about how Minecraft has changed the world. It didn't happen by chance. It's certainly flattering and to slowly get thrust into some kind of public spotlight is fascinating.
It was a long time ago that I made the decision to stop Minecraft development. Jens was the perfect person to lead it and I was looking for new ideas. While I tried to make it big again at first but it ended up failing. However, since I decided to stick with small prototypes, interesting challenges and I've enjoyed so much at work and haven't looked back since. I wasn't exactly sure how I fit into Mojang where people do actual work, but because people said I was important to the culture, I stayed.
I was at home with a cold a couple of weeks ago when the internet exploded with rage against me due to an EULA situation that I had nothing to do with. deal with. I was confused. I didn't understand. I tweeted this out of frustration. Later, I saw the This is Phil Fish video and realized that I didn't have the relationship I thought I did with my fans. I've become an image. I don’t want to be an object of ridicule. I don't want to be accountable for something I don't understand. That I don't want to work on. I'm not an entrepreneur. I'm not a CEO. I'm a nerdy computer programmer who loves to share opinions on Twitter.
When the deal is completed and signed, I'll leave Mojang and will return to web-based experiments and Ludum Dares. I'll probably end any project that I accidentally create that gains traction.
Given my public image, which is already a bit distorted, I don’t expect to be capable of ignoring negative comments however, at least I won’t be compelled to go through them.
I'm aware this goes against a lot of what I've stated in public. I don't have a good answer to that. I'm also aware that a lot of you saw me as a symbol of an apparent struggle. I'm not. I'm a person , and I'm right there with you.
I love you. All of you. Thank you for making Minecraft into what it is now, but there are too many of you, and I'm not able to be the sole person to be responsible for something this massive. In one sense, it's a part belonging to Microsoft currently. In a more broad sense, it's been owned by everyone for a long time, and that's not going to change.
It's not about money. It's about my mental wellbeing.
