Purdue Inside Minecraft

Purdue inside Minecraft

07-20-2021

Any Boilermaker alumni would tell you that Purdue University's campus is distinguished by the beautiful brick buildings, iconic fountains and bell towers. Now an Purdue student is building his own version of the Purdue campus for gamers in the world of Minecraft and Minecraft, making this the no. 10 Top Public University in the U.S. accessible to all.

Purdue Computer Science senior, Esteban Vicente-Paulino Richey, has built Purdue's campus inside of the game Minecraft. Richey began his dream project in the year 2019 and finished it 300 hours later, he had 3 million blocks being built. Richey now has 52 percent of the campus constructed within Minecraft. He has finished many campus buildings to the north of State Street alongside Andrew Klotz, who helped build 30 percent of the campus. The buildings that have been completed include the Wilmeth Active Learning Center as well as the Class of 1950 Lecture Hall, Elliott Hall of Music and campus residence halls, Ross-Ade Stadium and even Purdue Mall, complete with the Class of 1939 Water Sculpture.

Minecraft was first released to the general public in 2011. Minecraft is a "sandbox" game, meaning there aren't any goals or objectives. This allows players to be free of constraints. The world of Minecraft consists of different blocks made of different materials, where the player can arrange them and rearrange them to build scenes and structures. With over 200 million copies sold and 126 million active monthly players as of 2020, Minecraft is known as the best-selling video game of all time.

Richey's love of Minecraft started when he was in middle school in Carmel, Indiana, and the game first came out. His family had an old computer that was unable to run the game at the time, but he was able to observe other players on YouTube. In 2013, his family got a new computer that could play Minecraft, and he has been playing since.

"I believe that Minecraft is now a millennial type of game, that people of a certain age have played or had a connection with this game. Richey said that it's a game people of all ages are able to easily participate in be creative, be innovative, and collaborate with other players.

Richey began his studies at Purdue in 2018 as a freshman in computer science. Because he enjoyed taking advanced computer science classes in his high school Richey decided he wanted to pursue a degree in computer science at Purdue.

He states, "I had never been to Purdue before my first semester. But that fall, as I began to get used to the campus and my classes," he said. As a freshman He joined the Launch Campus Ministry and would go to the clubhouse located on Waldron Street. That is when he got the idea to build that house in Minecraft.

"Because it was my first building that I spent many hours in, I constructed it with great attention to detail in Minecraft. a1 host It was a hit with all my friends. After I had created it I thought, "Why not make the front yard, then the backyard, then the buildings across from it?" Then I continued to build and expand to what I've built today," Richey says. "I also used Purdue’s virtual tour maps, and topographical maps to inspire me to build and design the campus in the game. It should be easy to recognize as an entire.

The most challenging part of building campus has been the construction of new buildings and structures as Purdue continues to grow. It's difficult to keep up with all the changes happening around campus. If (Purdue President) Mitch Daniels could let me know when new buildings are coming up or are being renovated ahead of time it would be wonderful," Richey says as he chuckles.

Richey, a rising senior, plans to make his big leap as a computer science student in May. He will continue working at RSA Security, where he is currently interning. He also plans to continue building Purdue University in Minecraft.

"I love the way campus is designed, and I am awed by the people on campus as well as the fact that I have so many memories of every building I've constructed on this campus. It's enjoyable and makes me eager to build more. Richey said that although I was apprehensive about having to stop when graduation, it's possible that I'll keep building West Lafayette.
