Here's how 'Minecraft' Creates Its Gigantic Worlds

Have you wondered how Minecraft can create huge worlds that are full of tiny details, such as elaborate waterfalls and cliff faces? PBS' Game/Show is happy to explain it in a brand new video. As you'll see below Mojang's game is based on procedural generation, which creates objects and environments that are at once random, but governed by rules that provide an unchanging logic. Mountains are always rough and sprinkled with snow, for example, while the low lands are typically full of grass and trees.



Minecraft is specifically based on Perlin noise calculations, like those you'd use to create a rough-looking texture for models in 3D. It begins on a broad scale, painting an initial topographical map and then adds "noise" through finer terrain details like wildlife, lakes, and shrubs. It also has enough freedom to create unexpected delights, like the elaborate rock structure that you can see above. Just like in the real world, there's an incentive to discover what's just across the road.



Procedurally-generated game content certainly isn't new. Spelunky and the Diablo series utilize it to keep their environments up to date, and Borderlands uses it to generate unique weapons. https://a1host.net/ It is essential for the seemingly endless number of worlds that exist in No Man's Sky.
