DICE awards Journey wins


Chen reveals that the studio was insolvent before the game's release.

Journey was awarded Game of the Year at the 2013 Design Innovate Communicate Entertain Awards (DICE) alongside seven other awards.



The game that Thatgamecompany developed for meditative play won Game of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Game Direction, Outstanding Innovation in Gaming, Casual Game of the Year Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction Outstanding Achievement in Online Gameplay Outstanding Achievement in Music Composition Originality, and Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design.



It was nominated in all categories, however it didn't win Outstanding Achievement in Gameplay Engineering (which went at XCOM: Enemy Unknown) and Outstanding Achievement in Story (which went away to The Walking Dead).



The win will be sweet for thatgamecompany boss Jenova Chen, who in his DICE address mentioned that development of the game had led to the bankruptcy of her studio.



Journey was more than three years Sony funded the studio he worked for the game, and Chen was not able to pay his employees after they had completed their work on the game.



It has since gone on to be the best-selling PlayStation Network release of all time.



Superbot will be able to take comfort in the fact that the fight game of the year, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, was awarded Fighting Game of the Year.



All nominees were vetted by the DICE academy's peer panel, and all academy members could vote for the winners.
