The Nirvana Shirt - A Piece of Music The History of

Another case is that of Jeff Fisher, a graphic designer who claims to have invented the smiley face. Fisher states that in the year 1991 when he was approached to design the smiley face by the company that makes tshirts. But, Fisher says he never had the chance to discuss the design with Nirvana, Inc. During the course of his time with the group, Fisher continued to work with them following the death of Cobain in 1994.


Nirvana's lawyers argue that Jacobs has violated trademark and copyright laws. They argue that Jacobs used the Smiley in his 1993 grunge album, which included promotional posters, garments, and shirts. The clothing changed the "M" in the initials of the band with "J." The t-shirt contained a 1991 image by legendary grunge photographer Charles Peterson. The t-shirt also offered a seahorse pin to go with it.
