After Minecraft Says No to NFTs, NFT Worlds Vows to Create its Own Game

Mojang has made waves in the past when it stated, in no uncertain terms that NFTs are not a good fit in Minecraft (opens in a new tab). This is a good thing for gamers but not for those who have already committed to using blockchain technology in games like NFT Worlds.

"NFT Worlds, a decentralized, fully customizable and community driven, play-to ear gaming platform that lets world owners create limitless metaverse experiences or games for players or communities within the worlds they control," its website (opens new tab).

"Currently using Minecraft and it's sprawling open-source ecosystem, NFT Worlds builds on the foundation of decades worth of open source development within the Minecraft community and radically extends it to allow an entirely new types of 3D Voxel-based, decentralized gaming metaverses backed by the Ethereum blockchain."

What that means, basically, is that it supports custom Minecraft servers that allow players to buy virtual land and earn (and spend) cryptocurrency, a hybrid system that Mojang's blockchain policy seems specifically aimed at shutting down. And it definitely had an impact: The price of $WRLD (opens in new tab) tanked badly immediately following Mojang's announcement.

In response to Mojang's latest policy, NFT Worlds has issued a statement (opens in a new tab) condemning Mojang and Minecraft as having "no regard for creators, builders, and players," and vowing to make its own game to replace it.

"We're creating a brand-new game and platform based on many of the core mechanics of Minecraft however, with the modernization and continuous development Minecraft has been missing for a long time," NFT Worlds said. "This is not a rewrite of some open source Minecraft replica, which will infringe on the EULA or still risk legal action, this is a complete rewrite built from scratch. The players will also be able to see a brand identity change that is more friendly to players as part of this transition.

The new game will have a "playstyle as well as a look and feel" similar to Minecraft, NFT Worlds said, but will feature performance optimizations, graphics enhancements and new gameplay that will offer "a more accessible, affordable, and enjoyable playing experience." It will be free to all players and "completely free of the policies that Microsoft and Mojang have over Minecraft." However, it will also be compatible with older Minecraft server plugins, so when the time comes to change platforms creators of content will be in a position to move without much fuss and effort.

Making an improved Minecraft than Minecraft (while maintaining compatibility with Minecraft) is an awfully large undertaking, and one that I think could trigger immediate and intense examination from Microsoft, but NFT Worlds doesn't have many alternatives. Mojang has effectively shut down its business model. However, a total change from a brand new game will mean that existing users and all the work they have done so far will be lost. The only way to keep the wheels moving is to create something that is functionally Minecraft but not actually Minecraft. It's a big task.

NFT Worlds stated that it will make changes in its launcher and play pages in order to attract new players not interested in the cryptocurrency aspect. It also laid out some important, high-stakes stakes for NFT Worlds' future as a battle for both the philosophical and technological soul of the internet.

NFT Worlds stated that Microsoft has clarified that they will always do what is in the best interest of their shareholders and balance sheets, to the detriment of innovation, player experience, and creators. "We believe that an open, free, and a more evolved version of Minecraft that Minecraft brought to the world will create a better future for developers, creators and ultimately gamers.

"We're fighting for a better future that is a player-owned and operated economy where everyone benefits from their contribution to the ecosystem. This is a big task.

I've reached out to Microsoft for a response on the NFT Worlds plan and will update if I receive any response.
