Tim Sweeney, founder and CEO of Epic Games, says that the Epic Games store "definitely won't" restrict the sale of games which feature NFTs. Sweeney's statement follows an announcement by Minecraft developer Mojang that outlined the company's stance to not permit blockchain technologies or NFTs in Minecraft.
Following Mojang's announcement, one fan reached out to Sweeney on Twitter to inquire about whether Epic Games would take a similar stance. Sweeney replied in a negative manner.
He says that developers should be able to decide the way they build their games and you can decide whether or no to play them. Servertracker "I believe that operating system and stores manufacturers shouldn't attempt to dictate their opinions on other players. We will not."
Sweeney's remarks were addressed by another user who asked what is the difference between this and Epic Games its policy against content that is discriminatory and obscene. Sweeney stated that this is due to "editorial and branding judgments" and believes that Epic has made the decision "to draw the line at the accepted norms."
Some users on the PC gaming subreddit have expressed displeasure with Sweeney's position, pointing out that the Epic CEO has previously weighed in strongly against NFTs. In September 2021, Sweeney publicly posted a copy of an email response in a Twitter reply which states "We do not want to engage in NFTs since the entire field is tangled up with an intractable combination of scams, fascinating decentralised tech foundations, and scams."
Sweeney has now stated that he believes that Epic Game store developers should have the option of pursuing such integrations, however it is clear. In his tweet in response that "Crypto is complicated.
