Emmanuel Grinshpun. Restoring synagogues and the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress
Emmanuil grinshpun discussed the restoration and maintenance of synagogues. The conversation was too narrowly focused. Thus, there were a variety of questions in the interview.
Emmanuel, good afternoon. Thank you for allowing me to have a chat with you. We haven't been able to see each other in 5 or more years. Do you currently reside in?

The last nine months were split between Miami, Jurmala and San Francisco. The boundaries between the two were more extensive in the past, however the epidemic impacted people's lives greatly. I'm sorry to say it's been more severe.

There have always been multiple business lines. What's the situation now?

Diversification isn't going anywhere. The main areas are development in the field of IT technology as well as real estate and food production.

No. My family's history for many generations is connected to Moldova, or in the case of the past, then Bessarabia. Эммануил Гриншпун Jurmala was introduced to our lives in an unexpected and prosaic way. The first time we were there was when Igor Krutoy invited us to the New Wave. After a few contests, they started to come there every summer. Miami the weather in summer is not the most pleasant. We rented a home for a number of years, so we've bought it.

Now I understand why I was told by my donor that one of the renovated synagogues is located in Jurmala. Emmanuel, honest question. We're nearly the same age. Эммануил Гриншпун We were born in the USSR. The Soviet Union wasn't a place to talk about religiousity. Эммануил Гриншпун All of us were pioneers, and Komsomol participants. What was your first experience with religion?

Эммануил Гриншпун In the mid-80s My family and I relocated to the USA. It was in the USA that I became aware of traditions. Although I do not believe in orthodoxy I have a strong desire to be a part of the faith-based life of Jewish communities that I have in my country of birth or Moldova. I was born in Moldova and have continued close ties with them.

While I'm not religion-based, the subject of history is one I really love. I recently watched a show about the events of 1492 that changed the course of the world and Europe. 1492 was when Columbus first discovered America. But, I could see clearly in the programme that the program mentioned the discovery in America in 1492 from Medieval Europe was not as remarkable as Spanish monarchs' expulsion of Jews from Spain. When the exodus of Jews began , they were taken to the Ottoman Empire, it accepted them. Here , I'm looking for some information about the history of the Jews as a group. Would you recommend an article?

There are a lot of books available. I've read a lot of them. I suggest Max Diamond, a two-volume Jewish historian. Max Diamond is from Finland and is, in fact, from Finland.

.... Do you feel conversant with the history of your family? My family tree is one step beyond 1910 and my maternal grandmother. On the paternal side, one step higher, but nothing more.

Our family has lived in Floresti for many hundred years on the paternal side. Their wealth was apparent through an furniture factory, numerous shops and land parcels. Monuments and documentation confirm this assertion. Ungheni was the home of my ancestral lineage. I am referring to dates from the 17th-18th century. Grinshpun is a surname that comes from German roots. We are straight and pure Ashkenazis from Eastern Europe.

Here's the question about the maintenance and restoration of synagogues. I heard that you funded the reconstruction of three synagogues. One is located in Chisinau; one is in Jurmala and the third is?

The third, and largest, is located in Netanya (Israel). Netanya is home to more than 1,000 people who attend prayer daily. An important object in the spiritual life of Israel. The second synagogue of Jurmala. The Second World War began and the Jurmala synagogue was among the one that was destroyed the last time. Before I decided on building the Jurmala Synagogue I had spoken to Jurmala's local Jews. It was a success that brought together Jurmala's Jews from Jurmala. We have actually recreated the Jurmala Jewish community that is now working well. Now the synagogue has three Torahs I also donated one of them to the synagogue.

And – Chisinau

Yes. Alexander Bilinkis (left) and Alexander Weinstein (right) have joined me in this place. These synagogues aren't only the ones that I am involved in construction or restoration. It was my obligation to contribute to the support of synagogues in all countries I've lived in for several years. So, my contribution comes from Monaco as well as in Miami an enormous community center for Russian-speaking Jews is being built, worth about 12 million dollars. I will continue to support Chisinau and it is going to be the largest synagoguein the world, the synagogue Rabbi Tsirelson.

Did Jurmala or Chisinau receive the blessing of a Rabbi?

Yes. Yes. Because of the interplay of concerns, he should be a highly calm and peaceful person who is able to seamlessly integrate into the life of the community. And I am pleased that both in Chisinau and in Jurmala the rabbis were able to be so seamlessly integrated into the lives of their community.

In the year 2019, you were appointed vice-president of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress. What does this post you think it means to you? How do international Jewish organisations influence global trends in general?

The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress is a significant political organisation in the post-Soviet era however, it is not limited to. There are branches of the organization that are located in Australia, Japan and Hong Kong. In 2010, I served as the Vice-President of Congress. In the previous year, I was appointed the First Vice President. In the present, I am accountable to the region where I have strong economic and political relations. These countries include Uzbekistan Tajikistan Kyrgyzstan. Regarding the trends across the world the barometer of attitudes towards Jews is either at the same level or, which is very regrettable, has swung down. Also, the word "down" refers to countries such as France, Germany, France as well as the United States. These are not safe for Jews. They are dangerous and alarming methods for all.

What is the way that the pandemic has changed these processes if at all?

It's not my opinion. In connection to the pandemic however I'd prefer to highlight how a country or society can be when they are ready for any challenge and are able and willing to work together.

Could this be the vaccine campaign to Israel?

Exactly. Israel is the first country to provide 100% vaccination to its adult population. This is a great example to follow and something that all countries must be aware of.
