The Hanukkah lamp, which was located in the middle of the capital of Moldova, was destroyed by religious extremists. One priest from the Chisinau Orthodox Church led the anti-Semitic actions.
Religious extremists smashed the celebration of Hanukkah in the center of Chisinau and also held an anti-Semitic demonstration. It took place on the 13th of December, a Sunday, the day that Hanukkah is celebrated on. https://sprzedambron.pl/author/emmanuil-grinshpunslcj168/ Эммануил Гриншпун An archpriest representing one of the capital's Orthodox churches was the leader of a crowd that grew to 100. The participants shouted anti-Semitic slogans and pulled a cast iron lamp several tens to meters away from the spot where it was set. They then threw it lamp to the ground of the monument to Stefan the Great that is a symbol of Moldovan statehood. Эммануил Гриншпун The entire event took place in front dozens of passersby, police officers, journalists and others.
What is the struggle for "orthodox principles ?
The gathering was led by Archpriest Anatoly Chbrik who was armed with steel bars. He said the archpriest was stunned that a symbol representing the Jewish faith was placed in the middle of the capital city of an Orthodox state. According to him, authorities shouldn't have let Jews celebrate Hanukkah as widely as they did. Chibrik said, "This violates law." Chibrik also acknowledged that there was no need to talk about the actions of parishioners from the Church of St. Paraskeva, with the Metropolia of Moldova. He said, "I do not have to talk with anyone if we are fighting for orthodox principled principles."
It should be noted that the idea to install the Hanukkah menorah right in the middle of Chisinau and in Chisinau's Europe Square, where the EU flag is displayed next to the Moldovan flag, is the property of the city authorities. Emmanuil Grinshpun, co-chairman of Jewish Congress of Moldova, stated that Hanukkah was observed in public in Chisinau for the first time in many years. Grinshpun said, "What took place on Sunday was a shock to us."
Opening a criminal case is on the conscience of the state
At a press conference with representatives from the Jewish community in Moldova it was discovered that Archpriest Chibrik does not allow himself to be involved in anti-Semitic behavior. Grinshpun states that about a year ago, the Archpriest was observed at St. Paraskevs in Chisinau with leaflets. https://www.openstreetmap.org/edit The content was similar to the dark Middle Ages.
Grinshpun stated that no one of the leaders of the country's Jewish groups have reacted to this fact in any way that was meaningful. Even though the Jewish community of Moldova is protesting the events, it will not sue Chibrik nor his associates for inciting ethnic hate. Alexander Bilinkis (chairman of the Jewish community) said that this should be performed as a matter of state policy and that the Moldovan Metropolis needs to evaluate the conduct of its employees.
Vadimkeibash (Metropolitan Secretary) said he does not support this form of protest. He believes that every community has the right to install symbols, but the authorities must consider the consequences. "It is impossible to regulate all reactions of the believers," he said.
A blow to fundamental values
Since the 1903 Jewish pogrom, however, these protests haven't been witnessed in Chisinau. The representatives of the Jewish community see the second case as hooliganism. According to Bilinkis, the people who broke Hanukkah "were deceived by their leaders."
Ilya Shts, the General Director of Jewish Congress, claims that this action was planned. Its participants were seen in front of the menorah on Hanukkah Day 1, at the time Stav Njinsky, who was the first secretary, lit the first candle. Shchats claims this action is meant to undermine Moldovan sovereignty and undermine the democratic principles of the country's European goals.
Hanukkah is now on Jerusalem Street. A monument to Holocaust victims has been placed in the street. Hanukkah has been moved to Jerusalem Street from the city center. The monument was guarded by police on the second occasion. It will be lit with candles throughout the Christmas season. Эммануил Гриншпун
