RuneScape is Getting its Own Tabletop Games

The browser-based RPG that was once available has seen many alternative versions of its huge player base, between Old School RuneScape offering players with the classic 2006 experience , and the short-lived DarkScape providing players with more of a PvP-oriented experience. Now Jagex, the developer Jagex has teamed up with board game developer Steamforged Games to release not only one, but two tabletop games over the course of 2022.



Steamforged Games' collaboration with Jagex is the latest in a series of collaborations, bringing some of gaming's biggest franchises to a tabletop. The tabletop gaming giant previously created board games based upon series such as Monster Hunter World or Dark Souls. It also launched a Kickstarter campaign that raised more than 1 million GBP for Resident Evil 2. The company is now focusing on RuneScape and Gielinor, and plans to launch both as a book that will be the core for tabletop RPGs as well as a board game.

The two RPG adaptations will feature many of the most well-known characters from RuneScape and locations, allowing a group of up to five players to challenge classic quests from RuneScape and bring the adventure of the world of Gielinor home. Players will be able to create and upgrade equipment, engage with NPCs, and take on many side quests that are inspired by the classic MMORPG. Runescape servers The Kickstarter campaign for the board game will be launched later in the year, while the tabletop RPG books will be available for purchase directly.



The tabletop core book RPGs is notably compatible with the massive tabletop RPG Dungeons and Dragons' fifth edition core books, allowing dungeon masters to seamlessly incorporate elements of RuneScape into their campaigns. Jagex CEO Phil Mansell was optimistic about the project, expressing his excitement over the Kickstarter project "involving the RuneScape communities," while Steamforged CCO Mat Hart believed the "rich RuneScape universe will translate beautifully" into a tabletop-based setting.



RuneScape has seen a significant expansion from its browser-based roots in recent years, with Steamforged's board games being the most recent effort from Jagex. In an interview with Game Rant last July, several Jagex employees discussed the possibility of transitioning Runescape's mobile version to a cross-platform release and in September, Jagex partnered with the creator of the wildly popular Old School RuneScape mod RuneLite HD to make the HD version available for all players. Steamforged, the upcoming board game Steamforged will offer RuneScape's passionate fans another way to explore the world of Gielinor and will allow them to create their own adventures.
