Update: Jagex has reversed its decision after protests from the RuneScape community. The studio stated that it is "exploring possibilities" to work with Runelite HD creators until the new graphics are released.



"Yesterday we tried to clarify our stance regarding third-party HD clients or other projects that seeks to drastically alter the appearance of the game," the statement stated. "We are listening to your feedback loud and clear and we've been discussing it all day and, while discussions continue, we absolutely intend to take action.



"Our conversations today also included 117Scape and Adam from RuneLite and we are looking into ways we can work together to provide 117Scape's plug in as an alternative until our own version is ready to go live.

"We fully recognize that you all have an opinion in Old School. Sometimes that voice could be one of frustration about the decisions we make. Be assured that we always appreciate your feedback, no matter how good or bad. Human beings are not perfect and there are times when we make mistakes. Now we are trying to improve our process.



Original story 8 September 2021: Jagex has sparked controversy within its Old School RuneScape community for shutting down an HD mod that was about to launch.



The mod was dubbed Runelite HD, the mod was a complete visual overhaul of the original MMO and was something that the creators had been working on for two years.



In an article on their blog, Jagex explained that the mod was shut down due to the fact that the studio was working on the same project.



"Yesterday we contacted the developers of well-known HD projects and asked them to cease development of their projects, because this is a project we are directly investigating at Jagex. We look forward to sharing our developments with Old School's visuals.



In a message send to the creator of Runelite HD only known as "117," Jagex stated that the studio's own project for enhanced visuals was "still very early in the exploration phases," but that "any fan-driven project that aims to change the way Old School RuneScape looks is at odds with our own plans."



"We consider it essential to have consistency in the way Old School appears and therefore we want to make certain that our official changes will be the only ones that are available," Jagex continued.



In an Reddit post the creator of Runelite HD shared their displeasure at Jagex's decision. The decision was made "at the eleventh hour," they said, considering that the mod was set to launch on September 6.



They also said that they had offered a compromise. "I suggested that I remove my project from RuneLite once theirs is ready and also allow them to collaborate on the direction of visuals" of my project. "They refused to do so. So, it appears that this is the end. About 2000 hours of work in two years. A huge outpouring of love from all of you. I couldn't have imagined the overwhelming positive response I've received to this project.
