According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), Avanos Medical is recalling the Cortrak*2 Enteral Access System because misplacement of nasoenteric or nasogastric tubes has resulted in injury and death of patients. The recall covers 629 devices sold in the United States.
Avanos Medical feeding tube Avanos sells the Cortrak*2 enteral access system for its ability to visualize the patient's small bowel as well as stomach, which assists in placing a medical feeding tube. Patients may suffer injuries to their vocal chords, lungs or trachea if a tube is not properly placed. Cortrak 2 eternal access system Avanos Medical has reported that there have been more than 60 injuries and 23 deaths due to incorrect placement of feeding tubes for nasogastric patients using CORTRAK*2's Ental Access System. Pneumothorax (collapsed lung), pneumothorax, perforation (a hole or opening in the wall of a lung) as well as pneumonia. Pleural effusion (excess liquid between the chest cavity and the lungs) are a few of the incidents.
Avanos Medical described a plan for users to get updated labeling to confirm proper use of the nasogastric tube and nasoenteric tubes prior to use.
The Avanos warning was the second FDA warning in 2022 regarding enteral feed tubes. In February, parents and health professionals were advised by the FDA about the potential for strangulation of children with feeding tubes.
