World of Warcraft Players are Hosting Sit-in Protests after Blizzard Allegations

World of Warcraft players are organizing sit-in protests following Blizzard allegations

If you can't protest in California, try Oribos

- - By Cass Marshall - on July 22nd, 2021 at 2:39pm.

Oribos, World of Warcraft's social hub, is currently crowded with players. However, this is not due to an upcoming raid. Hundreds of players are participating in a game-wide protest against Activision Blizzard after a lawsuit was filed on Tuesday by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing. The court documents contain allegations of a "frat boy culture" that subjected female employees to "constant sexual harassment."

Fence Macabre, a roleplay guild that runs faction-neutral stories on the Wyrmrest Accord or Moon Guard servers, organized the protest. In addition the group has launched a fundraising campaign for the charity Black Girls Code, a non-profit organization whose mission is to teach girls ages 7-17 about computer programming and digital technology.

The lawsuit filed Wednesday night was widely reported. Many players were shocked to learn about the alleged the culture of a sport that is meaningful to a lot of people.

New members join the group when players leave the protest. A majority of their accounts are "sub locked," which means that they have pre-paid active gaming time on their account. I sat in the crowd for some time and watched the conversation ebb and flow. Some people came to say goodbye and wish fellow players luck. One elf stated that he was looking for a reason why that he could go back to Final Fantasy 14. Others who attended the sit-in took the occasion to express anger and frustration with specific Blizzard employees named in the suit, speculating in in-game chat as to which executive was responsible for the company's response immediately.

Hinahina Gray is a deputy with Fence macabre and a genuine reader who offers a Native Hawaiian perspective to media. "Some people who have joined us are not sure about their decision, and are considering leaving the communities they've created," she wrote in an Discord message. It's not an easy decision to make when you've made such a huge emotional investment. The majority of people here have cancelled their subscription. We wanted to organize an in-game protest because it would allow players from all over to sit and join us. We have enough game time to do something with it.

She also acknowledged that the decision-making process can be difficult for some players.

Gray said, "It is an emotional loss. A lot of people in our extended community are suffering. Particularly those who have managed to find people who are like them and develop the feeling of belonging." "As a queer Indigenous person, I certainly feel it.
