Minecraft Dungeons review - hours of fun for families with locked-down homes
Mojang Studios; Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, Xbox One (version tested)
This retro-inspired hack-and-slash sequel has plenty of Mojang's humor and character and even baby zombies and charming references to the original Minecraft
Mojang Studios must have had some ideas when they first thought of creating a Minecraft spinoff. Dungeon crawlers were one of the first suggestions. The genre has offered a variety of subterranean lairs as well as treasure chests, warrior skeletons, and other beloved Minecraft elements that range from Gauntlet to Diablo. The signature blocky graphics work well to ensure that Minecraft Dungeons will look familiar to those who have played them as they race through dioramas full of hack-and-slash action that reorganize themselves every time you play.
The plot is a bit thin. A vengeful lone wolf finds an object that transforms him into a powerful mage, and he takes over on the Minecraft kingdom. You can play the game by yourself, but it's more fun to play as a team. This can be played online or on console. In this mode players work together to bring down waves of skeletons, slime monsters, and giant spiders, reviving fallen allies as they move. The screen is soon flooded with light effects, which include lightning bolts, arrows lightning bolts, freeze rays, and more. There are four players participating in this game. Gauntlet veterans will be familiar with the nuances of this genre. The anticipation of the next wave and the chaos of battle, and the frenzied loot collecting are all the elements that make this genre enjoyable.
Fighting can be a bit nimble. There is one button for melee attacks, and one for weapons that range. It starts with a simple sword and bow but you will soon be able to unlock more powerful weapons like spears, battle hammers, and rapid-fire crossbows. I'm Just Here To Blog Enchantments can be earned for your weapons, giving them new weapons like lightning strike or poison cloud. Artefacts and armor provide you with special abilities like healing auras or lasers. The variety of defensive and attacking options creates and provides a wealth of opportunities for strategy and planning.
Minecraft Dungeons is a thrilling dungeon adventure that takes you from your first encounter with the cute, skeletal archer to your final battle with the Arch Illager. The levels are bursting with detail, with lush pixellated forests and deep redstone caverns, where mining carts that squeak through narrow tunnels and torches flickering on shaky walls. Each level has a clear path to the final level however there are numerous alternative routes to explore along with whole bunch of bosses and baddies including the terrifying Endermen with a soundtrack of horror movie music and necromancers that create hordes of zombies.
Minecraft Dungeons is alive with a lively, varied score, theatrical sound effects, and a myriad of references to the original Minecraft. If you're not enthralled by the tiny zombies that roar at you, arms stretched out, or by the collectible human-like dungeon keys that slink through the air in terror when attacked, then you've had your soul taken by the sorcerer.
Minecraft Dungeons isn't exactly an epic game. You'll be able to complete a basic run-through in just an evening, but the increasing difficulty levels bring up ever more powerful and interesting weapons and items. The game's levels are a bit random, which means they don't appear the same each time you return. This increases the replay value. Some players might be disappointed that the game map shows an area that's not available for purchase.
It's also disappointing that the game's main gameplay does not place as much importance on the player's imagination. In between each level, you're brought back to your training camp where you can buy new items and play with new weapons. It would be nice to be able to construct your own castle there. However, as a retro-themed hack-and-slash game with plenty of Mojang personality and humour, Minecraft Dungeons is a extremely entertaining game that will bring hours of entertainment to families that are locked down.
