GlyphosateGlyphosate is a choice for farmers who want to sustain their farming to ensure our food security for the long term.
It's not difficult to notice the world's experiencing an an increase in population. The world's population is expected to grow to 9.7 billion by 2050.1 But, it's not happening on the planet's agricultural land. This creates significant challenges for farmers responsible for providing top-quality food for Canadians, and other people around the world.

Canada is the fifth largest food exporter across the world.2 Canadian farmers will be essential in supplying food for the increasing population. https://www.nies.go.jp/kisplus/dtl/chem/YOT00096 https://www.nagoya-u.ac.jp/researchinfo/result/2022/04/post-241.html Not only will they need to cater for more people than they ever have before, they will have to do it while they manage pests and diseases which threaten their crops. They will also have to deal with erratic shifts in the weather, and make sure that their soil is solid and healthy for the next generation of farmers to come.

In order to feed the growing population, farmers will require 70 percent more food in 2050. * Source: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

This increasing demand is simply too to be handled by farmers alone. Modern tools and technology including herbicides such Glyphosate, allow farmers to manage weeds effectively and precisely, resulting in an increased sustainable and secure food supply.

What exactly is glyphosate?

Glyphosate is a popular choice as a versatile, non-selective herbicide by land managers and gardeners from all over the world. It has been used for over 40 years. Glyphosate works by blocking the enzymes that plants, specifically unwanted weeds, need to develop. The enzymes do not exist in humans, or in other animals.4 Thus, glyphosate is no danger to any of them when applied properly.

Glyphosate has many other uses that go beyond agriculture. https://agriknowledge.affrc.go.jp/RN/2010890726.pdf It is also utilized in green areas of municipal parks to shield wildlife from harmful weeds.6 It can also be used on railways for safety and visibility as well as to prevent fires.

Recently, there's been a heightened amount of focus on the use of glyphosate in our lives. While it's crucial to think about what is in our food and drinks but it's important to note that more 160 global health regulators including Health Canada have agreed that glyphosate when used correctly is safe for human consumption.

Aiding Canadians understand what glyphosate is, how it's used, and the critical function it plays in food production and sustainable farming practices could help ease the concerns surrounding what is just one of the many tools farmers use to ensure that we have accessible, safe and affordable food available to us.

https://www.pankougyokai.or.jp/information/glyphosate.html Glyphosate: What is the reason it's being used in agriculture?

The agricultural use of glyphosate-based herbicides is beneficial to consumers, farmers and the natural environment. It is key to effective weed control, a secure food supply, and sustainability for the environment. Let's take a look at each.

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (9 U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization) Farmers across the world are able to lose 30-40% or 60 percent of their crops every year to weeds and pests. This is a massive cost for farmers, especially when they consider the crops they grow as their main source of income.

It's clear the reason why farmers have relied on their tools throughout the year. Applying glyphosate to the fieldsparticularly with glyphosate-tolerant crops -- is an effective method to keep weeds that are destructive from taking over crops.9 As of now, no other weed control method has the same degree effectiveness, both economically and economically.

Crops Vs. Weeds: A battle of their lives

Glyphosate offers crops the chance to defeat up to 30,000 weeds for space, light, nutrients, and water.

Benefits for Canadians and all consumers around the world Benefits to Canadians and consumers worldwide: plentiful, affordable food

The population is increasing, and 50% of today's agricultural land is at risk of becoming unusable within less than 40 years due to desertification and land degradation.10 This has led to an increase in food insecurity. Canadians might be paying 55% higher for food without modern farming technologies like Glyphosate.

The food we love will be more difficult to find. http://pssj2.jp/2006/gakkaisi/tec_info/glyphosa.pdf Farmers will be able to cultivate more of the staple foods that we love for a long time thanks to the science of plants.

Glyphosate can help to manage the weeds and ensure that produce is affordable at the market. Glyphosate can also be used by farmers to take care of the land that Cherilyn Joy-Nagle of Mossbank in Saskatchewan describes as "their most important asset"--their property.

We are awestruck by eating at the table.

Farmers can grow better by using crop protection tools (including glyphosate) are employed to protect crops from diseases or pests.

42% More grains, like corn or wheat

72% more fruit

83% more potatoes and vegetables12

The benefits are evident. Is glyphosate safe for use?

Yes. As with all pesticides, it must always be used according to the directions on the label. In Canada the use of glyphosate is controlled by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) which checks crops for residues of pesticides, ensuring farmers are using it in a safe manner and also the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA), which provides the regulatory guidelines including product submission evaluations, product submissions, and approvals (or rejections)--and has one of the most rigorous evaluation procedures across the world.14

Although regulatory authorities are responsible to ensure that farmers are using the correct herbicides, farmers and manufacturers also are essential in ensuring that glyphosate can be used safely and properly so that there is no harm to animals, the natural environment or human beings.

In addition, due to advancements in technology and use of precision agriculture, farmers are able to leverage information to become more precise in their application of glyphosate as to where it's used and the amount applied.150

In the case of pesticide residues, it's rare for glyphosate to be found on food items and, if it is detected at levels that are too low, to cause harm. CFIA assures farmers that they are using herbicides properly and complying with established limits for residues16. It is extremely uncommon to find glyphosate in food products at a low level, which is well lower than the Canada's Government's limit.17 Since it does not pose any danger to humans or animals18.

Glyphosate use as a part of sustainable farming practices

Farmers use herbicides, like Glyphosate, as part an integrated pest/weed management practices--meaning they employ more than herbicides to control the weeds. Glyphosate has allowed them to use conservation tillage or no-till practices that provide long-term benefits for the soil, air and our general environment which include:

- The reduction or elimination plowing or tilling land

- Lower CO2 emissions

- Capturing carbon from the soil

Improve soil health

- Reducing runoff , and limiting erosion13

"No pesticide regulatory authority across the globe currently thinks that glyphosate poses risk to human health at the moment." -- Health Canada (January 11, 2019).

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

It is more crucial than ever before to ensure Canadian farmers have the technological, tools and support they require to support a growing population.

The most effective agricultural, food safety , and insect control methods can help keep our food plentiful and safe. Glyphosate is one of many instruments they'll employ to make sure Canadians, and people around the globe can access nutritious and affordable food--now and in the future.
