In 2009, the independent video game designer Markus "Notch" Persson released a work in progress that would later overturn every industry rule for achieving success. Part exploration and part building tool for creativity, Minecraft evolved from a beloved cult to an unimaginable hit, raking daily sales into the thousands. Notch was able to quit his job in 2010 to create Mojang, his own development studio.

Minecraft: The Story of Mojang is a feature-length documentary that follows the fledgling company over the course of its first year of operation as their image grew across the global stage and into the homes of millions of gamers. It features insights from industry legends (Peter Molyneux, Tim Schafer), journalists (Geoff Keighley, Stephen Totilo), tastemakers (Gabe and Tycho of Penny Arcade), and players profoundly impacted by the game (Yogscast, The Shaft, Minecraft Teacher), the film serves as an archive for one of the most unconventional success stories.
Minecraft is the second feature from game culture archivists 2 Player Productions (Reformat the Planet, Penny Arcade: The Series - Season 1, Double Fine Adventure!). The production was funded through crowdfunding site Kickstarter.com and ran for nearly two years at various locations across North America and Europe.
