Minecraft is digging its own grave with its latest release on XBLA - and by "grave" we refer to "lavish, gold-plated throne room with indoor pool and grape-feeding robots." Minecraft was profitable within one hour of its debut on XBLA the developer Markus "Notch" Persson tweeted today. This is in addition to the multimillion-dollar PC version that Notch developed.
Notch stated that Minecraft sold more than 400,000 copies within 24 hours, based on leaderboard participation numbers. According to Microsoft, Minecraft sold more digital copies than any other XBLA title within its first day of release and set records for digital sales.
Notch tweeted earlier today that he had Minecraft sales numbers (turns out, they were the above leaderboard figures). This sparked a discussion about the inner workings of XBLA developer contracts and Fez's Polytron. Polytron doesn't yet know Fez's exact figures despite the fact that it was published a month ago.
"Standard procedure" according to Polytron is "you discover the amount you've sold when you receive your first check three to four months later." Notch believed that getting instant numbers was the standard however he stayed clear of negotiations over contracts and doesn't know what it says about the subject.
Polytron wrote that Minecraft also receives free updates. "This is something every other developer on this platform is told is simply impossible." Notch replied: "We had fought for that, but only received only a handful of them. I'm not sure why they don't like it."
We may have found the secret talent of Notch and the secret to his success: fighting a contract, avoiding negotiation and winning.
MINECRAFT: XBOX 360 EDITION BREAKS DIGITAL SALES RECORDS Microsoft Studios Presents: Arcade NEXT program delivers two back-to-back record-breaking titles in four weeks
Microsoft today announced Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, Mojang's console version of the immensely loved PC game, has broken all previous digital sales records. It sold more than any other game within the first 24 hours on Xbox LIVE Arcade.
This comes on the heels of Trials Evolution, which similarly reduced revenue numbers on the first day of sales, as the first game of the "Arcade Next" program.
Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition was created by 4J Studios in conjunction with Mojang and Microsoft Studios, and introduces new gameplay experiences such as crafting menus that are unique games, game tutorials, and split-screen multiplayer. It also offers online multiplayer for up eight players via Xbox LIVE.
Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition is available on Xbox LIVE Arcade for 1600 Microsoft Points, and is the final game in the "Microsoft Studios Presents: Arcade NEXT" lineup which also includes Trials Evolution (Redlynx), Bloodforge (Climax) and Fable Heroes (Lionhead).
