Windows 11 SE: What You Can And Can't Do In Microsoft's Remote Learning OS

Microsoft launched Windows 11 SE, its student-oriented operating system, in November following the rollout in October of Windows 11. According to Microsoft, Windows 11 SE was designed with teachers and students in mind. It's designed to provide a simple and distraction-free environment for children to be comfortable in.



It's not the first student-focused operating system Microsoft has made. Windows 10 S was the student-focused mode of Windows 10, but Microsoft stated that this version of Windows 10 only blocked certain apps from downloading similar to parental controls. However, Windows 11 SE is an operating system that is distinct from Windows 10 SE that focuses on remote management.



After many schools across the United States started remote learning during the epidemic access to reliable hardware and software was essential for many school-age children to continue their education. Microsoft created Windows 11 SE with that in mind.



What is Windows 11 SE? Windows 11 SE is a cloud-first operating system designed for K-8 classrooms, with simple design and controlled installation of apps, according to Microsoft. What apps work with Windows 11 SE devices Microsoft Office, Teams, Minecraft for Education and OneNote all come preloaded on Windows 11 SE, and apps such as Google Chrome and Zoom can be downloaded. However, only administrators can download and manage other applications via Microsoft Intune for Education. Microsoft gave this list of the six kinds of apps that can be downloaded:

Test-taking "solutions"



Accessibility apps



Effective classroom communication apps



Apps for vital diagnostics management, connectivity, and supportability



Browsers



Messenger and Spotify apps did not make it. This means there are fewer distractions for Windows 11 SE users. However, Microsoft said apps that run in a web browser will still work.



You can't also change the settings of the operating system. Administrators can only change the settings, similar to the apps. Administrators can also remotely wipe the device remotely.



How does Windows 11 compare to Windows 11 SE? Windows 11 SE and Windows 11 SE are different in the sense that Windows 11 was intended for personal use, while Windows 11 SE was created for remote management in IT or classroom settings. The different goals affect how users can access the operating system, and which apps can be executed. Minecraft servers can be upgraded from Windows 10. Windows 11 has no limitations on apps. Only administrators can install apps on Windows 11 SE. Even then, they are able to choose from a small number of applications. The systems function and look identical if you do not.
