1. Prospektif
- Sebelum orang membuat keputusan dan bertindak, biasanya ia juga menilai dan mempertimbangkan. Dengan kata lain, batin akan menilai perbuatan-perbuatan seseorang mendatang. Batin yang memberikan pertimbangan-pertimbangan inilah yang dimaksud dengan hati nurani prospektif.
- Pertimbangan itu terwujud dalam bentuk larangan untuk berbuat buruk, dan anjuran untuk berbuat baik.

2. Retrospektif
- Saat seseorang membuat keputusan-keputusan dan melaksanakan putusan tersebut atau bertindak, biasanya dia berpikir ulang atau membuat semacam penilaian terhadap apa yang telah dilakukannya. Apabila seseorang bertindak yang tidak etis dan bertentangan dengan hati nuraninya, setelah bertindak dia akan menyadari bahwa tindakannya tersebut tidak benar, dan menyesalinya.
- Dapat disimpulkan bahwa hati nurani seseorang atau batin seseorang memberikan penilaian terhadap perbuatannya sendiri yang telah lampau.
- Hati nurani retrospektif berperan dalam menilai tindakan, apakah perbuatan-perbuatan yang telah dilakukan di masa lampau itu baik atau tidak.
